20 minutes after opening on a Friday the place was already full with 6 parties in front of us. We waited about 15 minutes until being seated. I read the reviews before coming. I get it and agree that the food nothing stellar. Don’t get me wrong. It was good. But nothing “wow” about it. I think the reason to go here is for the experience of the town square. We started by walking around the square and visiting the trains which you can go inside. And the charm of the restaurant just adds to the overall experience which is exactly what we wanted. Servers were friendly. Blue plate specials were good. And the pies/cobbler were what we would have expected from a place like this. My daughter enjoyed the corn dogs and ate half my father’s corn beef sandwich which my dad said was pretty good. The cherry limeade was a bit sour for my daughter but she liked it. Ice tea we made 1/2 sweet and 1/2 unsweetened which fit the palate of my wife. I had the Lucy plate which was pretty good. The corn bread plain is a bit dry but smothered it tasted pretty good. The pot roast, turnip greens and congealed salad made from mandarin oranges and pineapples was pretty good too. Again not stellar. But good and spot on for the ambiance which includes a toy train in the room next door and old town feel. Chocolate chess pie was really good, and blackberry cobbler I ate alone because everyone was full (a solid desert). I thought the prices were pretty decent given the area where I imagine rent is expensive.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: while venturing around the old downtown section we had seen this location previously and decided to make a trip back to try it out; it was worth the ride back out to the restaurant and the chance to take in a little history while strolling through the town square (it has a historical marker detailing the historical significance of the town square). The restaurant reminds you of the old small town appeal but with the proficiency of today's environment without losing it's charm. The Southern small town charm leaves you with a desire to linger and take in the buildings decorative reminders of the town's beginnings. The staff is engaging and had great feedback on the menu choices and made great recommendations during this visit. As a fish lover, they were able to satisfy my craving for my #1 fave - Catfish! It was nicely breaded and cooked to perfection. The baby butter beans just melted in my mouth and the turnip greens were a delight. A great home style cooked meal.

A downhome family owned country cooking resturant with old fashioned soda fountain to delight young and old alike. Food fare includes southern goodies that comfort the soul with sumptuous pies for desert. Kiddie menus and an authentic model train that circles the ceiling. Catfish Friday nights are the only evenings they are open. Extremely friendly staff and true hospitality to townsfolk and out of towners alike. Special thanks to Dorothy!

This was by far and above an amazing experience. The only negative I could say is the wait time was crazy. Which just means that’s how popular this place is and they don’t have a lot of seating options available. They had a lot of elderly clientele and so every time wed get a seat to sit and wait someone else would come in and wed give up our seats so they could sit. But standing you are in everyone’s way. So that was uncomfortable. And some of the carpet and equipment around looked like it’s had a lot of wear and tear so could use some attention given the high amount of traffic this place sees.

But the decor, the feel, the food, the staff were all a 5 star experience. We all tried something different and it all was amazing. Our server was so personable and even joked and laughed with us. The only food items we didn’t like were their pies. We all got something different and none of those were good. But everything else was delicious!! I would highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back!! (Also walk around the area if you have time. It’s such...
