Azúcar, Old City Bakery — Restaurant in Collinsville

Last week, my husband drove 30 minutes only to get there and finding the bakery closed. Disregard the time on Google, they are not open until 5 and actually I would call ahead before wasting time.

Today, we called ahead and placed 2 dozen of tamales on hold, come before 4 we were told. I arrived a couple of minutes after 3 to a locked door, a half visible sign that said be back at 2:55 and the open sign flashing. I loaded my baby and toddler back in the car. We waited. They came back around 3:10.

Upon checking out, I was given my $48 total yet when I received my card receipt, I noticed it was a little less than $50. When I asked I was pointed to an off side sign that said if you pay with cash you get a discount and the prices listed were in cash. The sign could be positioned in a better place for patrons to see with more clarity.

I am in love. I don’t often review places, but I want them to stick around a long time. I went because of the street corn. I was curious to try it. My intent was to take it home and eat it. I didn’t even make it out the door. I waited a minute, and it was served warm, so I figured I would try a bite and then go. Nope. I didn’t move until it was gone and then I was sad that I finished. Still hot, covered in delicious toppings that legitimately made my mouth water. Next time I will get it with the spicy topping. I had it all over my mouth.

I was also thrilled to see conchas. I feel like it can be hard to find them, so I bought a bag of four. I ate one in my car before even leaving the parking lot. I’m supposed to share the others but I don’t think they’ll make it until I see the other person…

I’m trying really hard to give them my business but every time I go there they’re closed. The hours on google are incorrect. They’re only open like 3 days a week now. So I try to make an effort to go there just to arrive to a dark and closed shop. Which is a huge bummer because it’s the only place in collinsville area to get bubble tea.
