I just stopped at Shipley off of Interquest in N. Colorado Springs. It was at about 2pm.
I was greeted by a nice young guy and I asked him what his favorite do-nut was. He suggested the raised with a Cherry or Strawberry icing. I got the cherry iced, a glazed buttermilk and a cinnamon roll.
I got in my truck and within about 40 seconds was taking a bite out of the Cherry raised. First impression: Texture of a day old do-nut. Second impression: no flavor in the do-nut or in the icing, which was ironic as the reason for the young guy’s recommendation of that particular confection was the “real flavoring” they used. Ok - ate half and moved on to the glazed buttermilk.
This one was tasty enough and fresher than the first one. A solid “B plus” or “A”.
The last one was the most intriguing one for me: a hefty glazed cinnamon roll. I pulled off a piece of it: a touch of crunch at the edge, doughy, but not in a bad way, sweet, but not too much. Maybe this would be worth the $3.79? Second piece: noticed a little film build up in my mouth… too much grease? I had, after all, just had a buttermilk donut… Third torn off piece: my mouth was thickly coated with… what? Grease? Flour? Both??
All I can say is, my best guess is undercooked both. I never ate paste as a kid, but I imagine this is what it was like. It coated my mouth and tongue in the most unpleasant way. I actually chewed the icing off the remaining cherry raised donut in hopes of it cutting through the gak that was smothering my mouth. Didn’t work. In ten minutes I was home and made myself a cup of coffee to cut through it. It has taken five swigs to remove the majority of whatever it was.
I don’t write nasty-grams often. I’ve done a few in my 60 plus years, but it has to be a pretty notable experience, which this was. I truly hope this was a one-off bad product day for these folks, as no one wants to see a new biz go under.
Best of luck to you folks, get a handle on the QC. I probably won’t be back, the quality definitely didn’t match the price, but I might have just caught you...
Read moreToday, I made the decision to place an order for pickup through Grubhub. Upon my arrival, I approached the window, only to be met by an exceedingly discourteous individual named Jane. She treated my request for my order as though it were an inconvenience, implying that my presence at the window was a problem since I hadn’t placed my order at the speaker. Despite my surprise and the egregious lack of professionalism I encountered, I opted to buy an additional donut. However, in the midst of the disorienting experience, I drove off, only to later realize I had forgotten my donut. Since I had gotten a receipt I finally had learned who was “helping” me and I use the word helping very loosely. In a state of genuine disbelief over the poor quality of service, I returned to retrieve it, only to be subjected to further belittlement and harsh reprimand from the employee named Jane. The other employee that was working with her had even apologized to me on behalf of Jane because she also could not believe how she was acting. If I want to be humiliated I’ll pay for it, not for free by Jane when I’m picking up breakfast at 9am trying to...
Read moreGrowing up in Texas, I know that Shipley donuts are pretty darn good, especially for a chain. Today I visited for the 3rd time since opening, my first two visits were good like they are supposed to be, but today YOU REALLY DISAPPOINTED ME!!!! I Get the unglazed buttermilk cake, they are crispy on the outside and nice and soft in the center, OR THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. I purchased four today and all four were over cooked and hard all the way through, try to break off a bite and half the donut shattered. I tried eating them, but ended up throwing them in the trash. If I were a first time visitor to Shipley donuts based on this last order, I would never come back, couple this experience with the way high prices, and I won't be coming by very often. Glad that Shipley has come to town, but you have some work to do to get it right.
Well, Shipley responded to my post with a generic response, go figure. No offer to replace the donuts, or any attempt at all to make it right, at least over 1000 people have now seen my post and know to beware of inferior donut quality. Sorry Shipley, I see no reason to return...
