If Urban Egg is "Best of the Springs" for breakfast, then Colorado Springs has a pretty low bar for excellence.
These comments likely apply to other locations.
Although most of the food offerings are innovative and excellent, there are problems in other aspects of their service.
About a year ago I commented on the noise level at the 5925 Dublin Blvd. location. At the 5262 N Nevada location I see that they have applied acoustical panels to the ceiling in the front room, but it's not enough. The noise level is still intolerable. They need to cover most of the high walls with absorption panels, also. Again, a benchmark for the best restaurant acoustics in a high-ceiling room is Panera Bread.
Most chefs seem to be clueless about what "crispy bacon" means. Webster: a : easily crumbled : BRITTLE b : desirably firm and crunchy
I ordered "crispy" turkey bacon, but it was delivered limp. I sent it back. The manager brought it back, only slightly more well-done, but still not firm and crunchy. I sent it back. The manager brought it back, again, and it was crispy, as the definition specifies. That means when I press it, it breaks; when I bite it, it crunches. The same result should apply, of course, to pork bacon. Too many interactions to meet my expectations.
Another pet peeve is place settings that do not include side plates, or saucers, for coffee spoons, and other odds and ends. Most restaurants seem clueless about this, also, expecting the customer to throw such items onto the table, which may or may not be sanitized. If they don't want to invest in such tableware, then, at least, they should deliver cocktail napkins for each cup and glass.
Jam/jelly was not included or offered with an English muffin, but supplied only on request.
Aside from these management issues, the waitress was very good.
By the way it's unfortunate that the Nevada location was not designed with a second level. It would have one of the best, mountain views...
Read moreANOTHER UPDATE: Well, we are officially done with Urban Egg!! We have been going here for years and its always been consistent in recipe and food quality.
About a month ago I went and I was sad to notice something changed with the pancakes. They had the best pancakes in town (to me). I asked the waitress if they had new cooks. No, they have a New Owner. There were a few other things wrong with my meal (which has never happened before) so the Manager came over. The manager explained they were "Tweaking some things" including the pancakes.
WHY WOULD YOU MESS WITH SOMETHING THAT HAS KEPT PEOPLE LOYAL TO YOU FOR YEARS.
So I go back a month or so later....hoping...hoping things were back to normal. NO!
I had my favorite biscuits and gravy and a pancake. The Biscuits and gravy were different to, sausage tasted different, the gravy was a different texture and taste and had fatty globs floating on the surface. WTH? Never has this happened here before.
They changed it.
The pancakes were still weird, a little darker and the flavor was different to how they have been since the beginning. Our pancakes were also gooey in the middle. We sent one of them back, the next one was gooey as well (we didn't bother to mentioned it, paid the bill and left. I was so sad when we left. This was my favorite place and it has gone downhill fast (Since new Owner etc took over)
STOP MAKING CHANGES....YOUR GOING TO LOSE LONG TIME CUSTOMERS!!!
Update: Still the best!! Ate here this morning. Prices keep going up though. The quinoa bowl is now officially double what it was just a couple years ago, it's good but worth $12 for some quinoa and coconut milk, a little honey and cinnamon, (I don't get the nuts on it) I don't think so.
We have been going here for years. The food is consistent and always good! They have the best sausage gravy in town and Buttermilk Pancakes. This particular location ( on N. Nevada) has the...
Read moreI absolutely love this place. Every weekend I'm begging to go to urban egg. I'm a creature of habit and I always end up getting the biscuits and gravy. They are absolutely incredible. They're not your average B&G, the gravy is a bit sagey, and it's something I'm constantly wanting. They also have delicious pancakes. Different varieties, super yummy & and super big. You actually get your bang for your buck here(or however that saying goes). Another thing I love is all of the different drink options and the fact that their juice is freshly squeezed. Staff is very friendly as well. (:
Edit:: my husband and I come to urban egg as a little treat, as it is a little more pricey than some other breakfast places. I didn't use to mind spending a few extra dollars because the food was really good and the service was awesome.
This last time we went, it was ..not the best. We were waiting outside for our table, and it sounded like a club inside. The music was so loud, the people were screaming over it..when we got to our table, I couldn't hear my husband and he couldn't hear me unless we were also screaming, but I don't like everyone hearing my conversation, so we stayed pretty quiet. It was awkward. The service was meh. She was nice, but wasn't that very attentive. The manager used to come around to each table, and this time , they didn't, although I wish they did. 14 dollars for a flight of pancakes that went pretty much untouched because the top was so burnt.(The buttom was really soft tho, so maybe they were rushed). The beverag sizes are pretty small and if you want soda, just know it's 4 dollars for a can..with no refills. They don't tell you that up...
