Charco Broiler used to be one of my favorite steak houses. It was not pretentious; it was just about steak. That was one good thing I could always count on at the Charco Broiler. It has been over a year, and we decided to head back for a good steak. Boy, was I surprised! It was so disheartening. My filet mignon was this little round thin piece of meat that lacked flavor and juices. Without the good steaks it was hard to ignore all the other issues with Charco Broiler that may have always existed, but I never really paid attention to. First off, the presentation of food is pretty bad. For garnish we ended up with a slice of pineapple. Weird, just weird. And my steak didn’t come with any sides or nothing. I actually made reservations for dinner by calling in earlier in the day. I was put on a long hold, as if maybe reservations are no longer needed. When we arrived, we sat in the front area with the booths, which I thought for dinner we would be seated in the back dining area. Then there was the awful vintage rock music that was playing. Something that is not good for digestion or to set the mood for a good dinner. It was just weird. Then, we got the check. There is this fee that they are charging for the kitchen staff!! I guess their kitchen staff is now paid in tips instead of a decent paycheck. Crazy! I won’t be back. I’m putting this option out to pasture!

Haven’t eaten here in a number of years. Ownership is still doing a good job balancing value with the challenges facing small businesses today, especially rising food costs and in some cases, labor shortages. My wife had the 6 ounce bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin and I had the 14 ounce New York Strip steak. We ordered both steaks medium-rare and they were cooked perfectly. Many steak houses get that wrong. We started off with salads. Extra charge. Not available as a choice for your one side. Hmmm…..My wife had a Caesar and I had the lettuce wedge. Both were served chilled. Ingredients were crunchy and fresh. Very satisfying. For our one side, we each had the baked potato. Be warned - if you order it “loaded” (butter, chives, sour cream and cheddar) there’s a $2 up-charge. I couldn’t find that disclosed on the menu. Maybe I missed it? For dessert we shared a (huge) slice of their famous coconut cream pie. Very rich and we couldn’t finish the entire serving. Lastly, that 5% kitchen staff surcharge. Annoying, but if you are into reading the fine print on the menu down low in one corner, it’s disclosed. I get it. As I said earlier, restaurants are struggling with cost and labor issues. All in all, the Charco Broiler is still relevant, still provides value, and deserves your patronage. Photos attached.

The very first thing I noticed walking in was the musty smell of dust and cigarette smoke lingering from decades ago. The place is dark, comically outdated, feels dirty and just a little creepy.

The half-walls of railroad ties are black and shiny on top from years of people touching them. "Decorative" brick accent walls have cement oozing out of the cracks like squished mud. Some areas of the ceiling are plastered so sloppy that spikes drip down over an inch long in places. There are just so many rough surfaces all over that have been collecting grime and odor with no good way to clean them. The lighting above our table was powered by antique wiring that's been patched from many smaller pieces that were twisted together to reveal the exposed copper. I think the wood trim by the table had a grey layer of dust on top. And I have to wonder how old that carpet is and how many stains it's hiding...

Service was actually fairly good. The food was ok, but I think overpriced for the bad visual presentation, overall room atmosphere, and small portions. We each received a small complimentary roll with a cold and unspreadable slice of butter. My old fashioned drink was watered down and lacked favor, until the artificial cherry juice at the bottom. It was also $9 on the menu but $11 on the bill. They even tacked on an unexplained 5 percent "ksf" charge at the end. Kitchen service fee maybe, but why?

I obviously can't recommend this place or understand why it gets about 4.5/5 stars on average. A lot of people must love the smelly, dusty, tacky atmosphere, or somehow overlook it all just because there's some steak on the menu... I just...

Well let me start off with the good. The ice water was well prepared and tasted good.

The house salad was acceptable but the Chex on top was strange. So nothing to complain about.

The onion soup was pretty tasty.

Now onto the dinner rolls. Cold. They tasted and were hard like week old grocery store bagged rolls.

The onion rings. They were cold, yet burnt. They were fried in old and burnt. Yet served cold and on lettuce with ketchup.

The NY strip. Both steaks ordered medium. One was medium and one was gray. They were rubbery, tough and no flavor. But the A1 wasn’t screwed up. But come here on $35 for a steak with one side? $35 is fine for a good steak, but i prefer leather saved for my boots.

The mashed potatoes. A weird yellow-Orange color and bitter. Ordered gravy for mashed potatoes and it was a gelatinous salty goo. And since when is gravy for mashed potatoes $2.49 extra ?

The $5 house wine was the best value.

The kicker to all of this.. $120 for two people with only one alcoholic drink ($5 glass of wine) and ice water.

Don’t get me started on the 5% kitchen fee. The kitchen staff should have been paying me to try and eat that.

The night before ate a steak chain in FoCo. 1000x better and $80 (before tip) for 4 people (and two sides each).

I am not sure how people give this any stars and say it’s good. Every fast food burger joint is better than this.

I cannot remember when I had a worse meal.

It a one star for quality. They won’t let me give zero or negative stars for value.

I don’t write reviews, but after paying $120 for those two „meals“ I want to warn people...

There was a group of 4 of us that came in on Sunday Morning. Our server Sam was friendly and took our drink order. We had 2 mountain dews, Dr Pepper and a Pepsi. The Pepsi and Dr Pepper were kind of flat but we didn't say anything. 2 of us ordered steak and eggs with fried potatoes, 1 ordered the eggs Benedict and the other a breakfast burrito with spicy potatoes. The breakfast burrito was not served with spicy potatoes and the guy who orderded it said it was weird because there were beans inside. Never have I seen beans in a breakfast burrito. The eggs Benedict was not cooked properly and the eggs were more hard boiled. The 2 steak meals had no flavor on the meat and was completely charred on the outside. It was like cutting through shoe leather. Everytime we tried to cut a piece off the steak the potatoes would go sliding off the small plate they were sitting on. Sam did come check on us right after we got our food before we really had a chance to try it, we didnt see him again after that so we werent able to tell him. When it was time to pay we had to go find Sam to let him know we were ready. (We had already been waiting for about 20 minutes after our meal was done by that point) Sam did apologize and let us know there was other orders he was dealing with, not a big deal at all. This review is more for the lack of good quality food. I had never been here before and I was excited to try it since I heard good things about it. I was not impressed and wish I had gone to the other breakfast place instead. I will not be returning at all and I don't think the others in my party...
