I have heard a lot about the Colts Neck General Store, especially from classmates, who frequently whine about not having “the cougar” to eat in lunch. After being stranded at CNHS with no way of getting home, I decided to take the hike to the beloved store. As I started my trek down 537 it began pouring, I was just coming from track and my legs were tired, but I still broke out into a nice jog and got to the store in 20 soaking minutes. Upon opening the door I was greeted by an interesting interior and friendly staff. There is stuff everyone, tables, table games, signs, ornaments, all giving for a homey feel. As I stripped my soaked jacket off I approached a menacing chalk board menu filled with different egg and cold cut sandwiches. I ordered “the cougar” of course paying tribute to all my whining classmates, payed and sat down in a puddle. As I waited all sorts of people walked in and out - the staff knew each and everyone one - ordering sandwiches, bagels, and pancakes. As I say soaking wet, eating “the cougar” listening to the Vietnam Era music quietly playing over the speakers I thought if I walked 20 Minutes in a down poor, you could drive 10. (I’m only writing this because I am currently still stranded in the store) Thanks...
Read moreA Taste of America's Heart 🇺🇸 There are places that serve a good meal, and then there are places that serve a good feeling. The Colts Neck General Store is the latter—a truly American institution that feeds the soul as much as it does the body. Stepping inside is like walking back in time to an era when life was simpler, neighbors knew each other, and a handshake meant something. It’s cozy and inviting, just like the community it serves. 🇺🇸 As a veteran who served with the 110th MP Company, places like the General Store evoke the best of the United States. They offer a connection to the values of the country. The stories shared over breakfast or coffee feel as important as any historical event. The small-town spirit, resilience, and connection to the past resonate deeply. The store recalls the enduring spirit of Uncle Matty, and the values he fought for. In a fast-paced world, this store is a reminder of our national identity. It's the heart of Colts Neck, a taste of Americana. May it endure. 🇺🇸 #ColtsNeckGeneralStore #AmericanHistory #Patriotism #Veterans #UncleMattyComesHome #SupportLocal...
Read moreFirst of all I love the Store and decorum and how the owner keeps it nostalgic. The food is also top notch. However there are some things the occur repeatedly and are hard to ignore. First: if they run out of coffee and it’s an hour or less to closing time, they will not make more coffee and they have no problem letting you know it. Second: Most of the people who work here are miserable and one in particular is borderline rude. She actually makes us feel terrible just because we’re placing an order and she seems so miserable as she’s taking it.Awful customer service. I try very hard to give people the benefit of the doubt not knowing anyone’s personal situation however this behavior is consistent and if not for my love of the food and nostalgia I would never come back.
Updated review: I returned to the store yesterday and I have to say there were noticeable differences. Food was on point as usual, plenty of Coffee after 1pm and everyone working on this Sunday were extremely pleasant. I still have not come back on a Friday to see if anything has changed with the young lady who...
