We were visiting and missed good BBQ since we no longer live in the south. We are from Alabama so our bar was pretty high to be far. We both got a pulled pork plate that came with two sides. It was fairly expensive. The meat came covered in their signature carolina gold sauce which we were not expecting. We were expecting to put it on ourselves to try and if we didn't like it then we could use a more traditional sauce. My husband felt it was very mustardy even though we have had similar sauces on wings that were very good. I went back to order a small order of plain just so he could eat. The meat itself was tender and I didn't get many burnt pieces but my husband said he had quite a few burnt bites. The mac and cheese was baked and "traditionally southern" and not made with a reaux cheese sauce. We like both ways but the Mac and cheese was dry and had clumps of unmelted cheese throughout. The noodles were also very overcooked turning them into mush in your mouth almost immediately. The fried okra was very good and cooked perfectly. The breading was good and they were crispy without being burnt. The potato salad was good which we had very little hopes for. The baked beans were mediocre canned beans with hardly any additional seasoning. The hushpuppies were actually good which was surprising. We ordered their "homemade" banana pudding which was literally just banana pudding mix with some wafers on top. Definitely not homemade traditional banana pudding. The peach cobbler however was pretty good. It was made with real peaches which was a plus but there were a lot of them and we caught ourselves wanting more of the breading part because it was very good. Their brown bbq sauce was very good and we wish it would have been offered to us whether we wanted the sc gold sauce or plain to add our own to. We may go back and try some other sides and get our BBQ without sauce and for the peach cobbler, but honestly it was very underwhelming to be considered "the best BBQ...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI visited Mauriceās BBQ for dinner, and I have to say I had quite a mixed experience. If I were to rate my visit based solely on service and sauce, this place would easily take home a solid 5-star rating. The staff was super welcoming and attentive, making me feel right at home. Their knowledge of the menu and ability to answer questions with the utmost clarity deserves an applause!
Now, let's talk about their showstopper - the BBQ sauce. What a masterpiece! It was the right balance of tangy, spicy, and sweet, creating an explosion of flavors in every bite. We even bought two bottles to take home.
However, the star of the show, the pulled pork sandwich, left a bit to be desired. While the texture was on point with melt-in-the-mouth tenderness, the flavor was a bit of a letdown. The pork itself lacked seasoning and the flavors that one would expect from a well-seasoned, slow-cooked meat. It seemed as though the sauce was working overtime to compensate for the substandard taste of the pork, which is a bit disappointing for a BBQ joint of this repute.
I'm not saying it's a deal-breaker, because overall, the ambiance and service were definitely commendable. Mauriceās still holds potential for those who are not necessarily seeking out the best pulled pork sandwich. But if you're a pulled pork aficionado, you might find it lacking in that department.
Still, Maurice's is worth a visit, but I'd recommend trying some of their other offerings. Hoping the pulled pork sees an upgrade in the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf I could give zero stars I would. We have been to this location multiple times over the last two years and each time we are disappointed when we get home because we never receive the food we order. Just tonight we got dinner for our family and once got home just to find out my daughters order was missing items, my order (a pimento cheese burger basket) did not have any pimento cheese, fries, or hush puppies. This was extremely frustrating as so many times we had just told ourselves that they were busy and it wasnāt that they just didnāt care. However this evening we were the only customers inside or in the drive through. I attempted to call the restaurant multiple times to address the issue with no one answering the phone. I went up to the restaurant to have the issue corrected only to find out half of the issue is the lady to takes Togo orders deciding to just not ring in half the food you order, which I couldnāt even confirm until I got there as they didnāt feel it was necessary to give a copy of the receipt at the drive through.
This location has a complete disregard for customer service, your time, and your money. I have always loved Mauriceās however as I told the ladyās at this location tonight we will never be back to the Devine St location again.
Oh and donāt worry if you donāt tip enough to meet the expectation of Christina who just takes your order at the drive through she will let you know with how she...
