I ate a delicious submarine sandwich yesterday [11-3-2022] at The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs, at 1766 N. High St., in the "University District" neighborhood of Columbus.
I had been planning to attend a lecture on The Ohio State University campus yesterday afternoon so The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs had been a perfect location for a slightly-late lunch before walking across N. High St. and onto the OSU campus so that I would be able to attend my lecture.
I particularly enjoyed the wall decorations at The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs. Most of the decorations are neon signs or posters from many years ago; that location is visually extremely interesting.
I had studied the menu on-line in advance of my visit and had made the following food choice: "#1," "The Original Dave’s Cosmic Sub™," "Our Signature Sub," "Pepperoni, Genoa Salami, Prosciutto, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Sliced Banana Peppers, Onions, Fresh Garlic, Herbs, Provolone Cheese, smothered with Dave’s Cosmic Sauce."
I spoke for several minutes with the guy behind the counter, while my sandwich was being made, about several of the businesses that had been in that block of N. High St. many years ago that are now gone.
The business that I remember best from that block is Zachariah's Red-Eye Saloon that had been at 1778 N. High St. for several years during the late 1970s. Before Zachariah's had been "The Castle," a very-crowded three-floor-tall bar that had been in business when 3.2% beer had still been available to 18-to-20-year-olds.
I had never gone to those bars; I had been aware of them because they had been important parts of the culture in the "OSU campus" area during the late 1970s.
My sandwich at The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs had been delicious; however, I would have recommended either that they use a larger bun or that they use less "filling" in that sub.
The top bun of my sub had been sloped at a 45° angle, because the submarine had been so filled with its contents [particularly grated cheese that I have never before found in a sub], so my sub had been rather difficult to eat.
It had been impossible to neatly eat an overstuffed submarine sandwich that filled with that much grated cheese because the grated cheese and other condiments would fall onto the piece of paper each time I would take a bite.
Also, I learned, partway through my meal, that the lower bun of my submarine sandwich had an invisible tear on the bottom that opened up at one point and caused most of the contents [mostly condiments] to fall to the floor.
If you are "on South Campus" [I assume that at least "old-timers" still call that area "South Campus"] and are looking for a delicious submarine sandwich, I recommend The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs. You will find a friendly staff and some great wall decorations.
But I urge you to be careful while eating your food and to make sure that the piece of paper in which your submarine had been served is fully unfolded on the table in...
Read moreI would not say that these subs were cosmic, more earthly and mundane! They were as average as possible in every sense of the word. Imagine if your son ran a sub shop out of their bedroom with day old bread, left over lunchmeat and past due produce...that would have been better! Nothing stood out from the bread they microwaved (not freshly baked as stated on their website) to the lackluster toppings. I should have noticed they were not very good when going in at lunch time and being the only ones there. This is just another restaurant trying to play off of some offbeat name trying to serve "out of this world" sandwiches. They were out of this world but not...
Read moreStopped in at the Toledo location. Yes, it was lunch hour, but after waiting for 40-50 minutes and seeing numerous people come in after me and get their subs, I start to grow skeptical. I go up and ask if they were preparing my order and I got no response but heard them say that they lost the order. It doesn’t help that the person in front of me also went through the exact same process. Also, I ordered a large and they gave me the regular, so I got ripped off. Very disappointed and honestly don’t know if I’ll ever...
