I admit to being somewhat of a snob when it comes to Chinese food, BBQ ,Seafood and especially, Key Lime Pie. When Saturday last, the craving for Chinese food overwhelmed us, we decided to give Sophea a try based on a recommendation. We chose carry out for our first endeavor. The selections we kept simple, Chicken Fried Rice, Orange Chicken (I know it’s not an authentic Chinese dish) egg rolls and Crab Rangoon. The chicken fried rice was the best part of the meal. On a scale of 1-10. I’d give it a 5.5, not bad, but about what you’d expect from a strip mall in the outskirts of any middle sized city. The orange chicken I rate a solid 5, there was a fierce competition going on between the sweetness and spicy hot/bitterness. For the record, I’m one that believes orange chicken should be sweet and a pox on the house of anyone who tinkers with the simple chicken-orange-sweet, recipe. I don’t eat Crab Rangoon , but my wife says they were “..alright.” So let’s give the benefit and call it an even 6. Now, the egg rolls, what I found to be the worst part of the meal. I’m not saying they were bad, bad is something they would have to work hard to achieve. I ordered my customary 3, which allowed for leftovers, and discovered that if I poured on enough salt to violate the weekly FDA guidelines, I could choke down a bite. They were not just bland…they tasted awful. Aside from some frozen microwaveable ones I tried when Fleetwood Mac was still doing the “Rumors” tour, these cabbage bombs cooked in #2 Diesel, take home the “Worst Dressed “ prize. I’m not above giving Sophea a second chance, I believe in that if appears there may be hope. I’m told they serve a very good Mongolian Beef. Perhaps next time, mind you I’ll be a good while, we’ll dine in and open up to the complete experience. Columbus once had one of the finest Chinese restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to dine in, House of Yu was a First Class Restaurant and something every restaurant, regardless of the Genre , should...
Read moreI'm not going to lie about the food, the food was pretty decent. I got the general tsos chicken with a side of noodles and it wasn't the best I've had, but not the worst. The credit card machine went down so they couldn't take my payment. I only had a 20 dollar bill so I went ahead and gave my waitress a 10 dollar tip. The owner asked if he could write my credit card information down on a piece of paper to run later after the machine was back online. I told them I wasn't comfortable with that and that I could come back in a while and pay since I still had things to do. They were very rude about my response and it started to seem like they wanted to hold me hostage and they still had my credit card. They finally was able to get the credit card machine back online and I paid. While walking out she yelled in front of a lot of other people "are you not going to give your waitress a tip?!" and I reminded her that I already gave her a 10 dollar tip on a 20 dollar order. I won't...
