During a trip from home, the “foodie hub of Kansas City” to visit my niece at the great Ohio State University, she suggested lunch at Sycamore, which is located in a charming area called German Village.
It was a cool and drizzly day, so we chose hot drinks, including Queen of Cups (coffee with cardamom, lavender and honey) and Turmeric Tea, both of which were quite comforting. If you have never tried cardamom in coffee, stretch yourself to try it. You’re guaranteed to enjoy it! It’s quite lovely. We also had the Beetroot Sipper, a cold drink with the perfect blend of beet juice, vanilla and oat milk. What a fantastic combination!
The menu for lunch seemed just right, a blend of salads and sandwiches, colorful, healthy and with nuances from spice and unexpected additions to the dishes that made the familiar seem exotic and classier than you normally find for lunch choices.
I had a Sycamore Village salad full of healthy well dressed (lemon vinaigrette) vegetables that included asparagus, green beans, snap peas, and radishes with nutty arugula and bits of kale (perfectly sized) with a crunch from lightly salted pistachios and anointed with Parmesan Reggiano cheese. A perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken breast was served alongside this feast of vegetables. I’ll admit, I really wanted the Cuban but opted for vegetables. I am SO GLAD I did! If you ever opt for what feels like the healthier choice (one of Sycamore’s salads), you will have a hearty, flavorful meal that will last you throughout your busy day. Go for it!
Now. For those of who who say, I’ve gotta have a sandwich, the Cuban was amazing, according to both my family members who chose a sandwich. They specifically gave a shout out to the tenderness of the pork, the sour local pickles and the perfectly crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside French fries.
All in all, this is a place to which you will want to return again and again. Just do it. Pick Sycamore. You’ll be...
Read moreOh my goodness, what a treat Sycamore was. We came in on a Friday evening with a 5pm reservation. We were immediately seated at our booth and promptly given delicious focaccia and water. I wish I could remember our waitress' name, but she was very kind and helpful to us as first time diners.
We got the grilled artichokes and Suppli al Telefono as starters and we were blown away. If you are an artichoke lover, get them! They were perfectly seasoned and served with a sort of lemon aioli on the side. I could shamelessly eat 10 of them.
As far as entree's go, I got the pork tenderloin, my boyfriend got the black bass, my sister got the short rib ragu, and her boyfriend got the chicken thighs. Let me go dish my dish and tell you my thoughts.
Pork Tenderloin: herb deliciousness, the pork was cooked perfectly and insanely flavorful. I loved the mashed potatoes and I had never had rainbow chard and was pleasantly surprised! The strawberry rhubarb chutney was a delicious addition.
Black Bass: The skin is so crispy and flavorful. My boyfriend devoured it.
Short Rib Ragu: What a knockout. It simply took our breath away. Cream based pasta dish with short ribs but so. much. more!
Chicken Thighs: The chicken was tender and wonderful but the star is the couscous. Oh my gosh, package it up, give me pounds, it was everyone's favorite thing of the night!
As we finished our meal, dessert was calling our name. We got the chocolate chip cookie with vanilla gelato and a chocolate pot de creme to split. Both were very good, but the cookie was our favorite.
Definitely a great spot to check out if you want a fancier meal with a great cozy atmosphere. It was a perfect night!
Oh also, my literal one complaint was that the water served was not cold. I know that's such a silly thing to complain about and could easily be rectified, but that was my...
Read moreMy son is at Nationwide Children's Hospital (he has a chronic illness and has been inpatient for 18 months) and tonight myself and few other moms from the hospital decided to meet here to have a nice dinner and relaxing night out. We originally thought there would only be 4 of us, but a 5th mom was able to make it last minute after their baby fell asleep early. We pulled up a 5th chair and were told that the chair could not be placed in the aisle of the patio, which we completely understood and moved the chair so there were 3 on one side. The waiter thanked us for moving the chair and said it was fine. Then, while enjoying our food, the waiter came up to us and told us that we needed to leave because they could only seat 4 to a table. That if he knew we had 5, they would have told us we couldn't eat here. We of course got upset since we were mid eating and he told us they only allot so much time for guests to eat. Mind you, we had been there less than 2 hours and were actively ordering/eating. There was another party that wanted the table behind us that we took the chair from, but there was another table that was completely free for them to sit at. They did not offer for us to use 2 tables and told us we could stay if one person left or stood. Our waiter said the manager would be by to talk with us, but he just came and yelled at us that we couldn't be here since we have 5 people. We bought food and drinks and had planned to buy more but were effectively kicked out. We were so excited to eat there and have a night out, which we rarely get, but it was totally ruined. I hope no other guests receive this type of treatment....
