We had been eager to try Iris Caribbean Juice & Spice since its original opening, but it always seemed to be closed when we tried. So, imagine our excitement when we saw it available for delivery on DoorDash! We quickly placed an order, hoping for an amazing Caribbean meal. Unfortunately, our experience was a mixed bag, some highs but mostly disappointing lows.
The Good:
The highlight of our meal was the plantains and the cabbage that came with the jerk shrimp. The cabbage was seasoned perfectly, and the plantains were cooked just right: soft, slightly caramelized, and flavorful. If the rest of the meal had been as good as these sides, this review would have a very different tone.
The Bad:
The jerk shrimp was a letdown. Rather than being marinated and infused with jerk flavor, it was simply grilled shrimp with a dollop of jerk paste plopped on top. It lacked depth, spice, and authenticity.
The jerk chicken wings were even worse. They appeared to have been air-fried and then drowned in sauce. Not only were they overcooked, but they were also dry and unpleasant. My husband, who rarely wastes food, was so put off that he tossed the entire tray in the trash. That says everything.
The Ugly:
And then came the macaroni and cheese, if you can even call it that. We weren’t expecting gourmet, but what we got was unacceptable. Instead of creamy, rich mac and cheese, we received a low-quality, powdered cheese version that looked unappetizing and tasted even worse. It was the kind of thing you’d expect from a rushed weeknight meal at home, not from a restaurant. To charge $3.50 for what was clearly a $1 boxed product was an insult. They should be ashamed to serve this.
Final Verdict:
We love supporting local businesses, but unfortunately, Iris Caribbean Juice & Spice will not be getting any more of our money. The few good elements of our meal couldn’t make up for the lack of effort in execution, poor quality, and disappointing flavors. If they want to survive in the restaurant industry, they need to do better, because right now, it’s just...
