Stopped for lunch during an 11-hour drive and was very happy. I had the mustard fried fish with hushpuppies, poolroom slaw, and fried okra. The fish was crispy and tender and not greasy - really good. I did not get much mustard flavor, but the quality of the fish and the fry made me not care much. The poolroom slaw is a unique take on slaw; I had never had anything like it. The dressing seems like a vinegary barbecue sauce with a pretty decent kick. Interesting and good. The fried okra was good, but maybe got lost in the exceptionalness of the other food. Still, I would order it again. The hushpuppies were also crispy on the outside while moist and tender on the inside. They were neither dry nor oily, and occupied the sweet end of the hushpuppy spectrum. They also tended toward cakey/floury rather than crumbly/corny, but still a good cornmeal flavor. I had the lemon fruit tea, which seemed basically like an Arnold Palmer to me.
Wife and daughter split the deep-fried BBQ chicken, which is a smoked and barbecued skin-on half bird, then deep-fried (not battered). I only tried a bite of thigh and a little skin and that was excellent. My wife said the white meat was slightly dry, but was very pleased overall.
Service was prompt, courteous, and attentive, and the place seemed to be occupied by many locals.
I was sad I could only eat once as I would have liked to try more Q, but this is a rare find that may have us trying to go back on a future road trip. Most stop-along-the-way places are passable but forgettable, but we keep trying for those rare surprises,...
Read moreThis review is very equal for me, and will be updated at a later day. We visited the nunder new ownership location on their second day of opening. The new decor is beautiful and appealing! However I just don't think they have it figured out quiet yet. We did find some hair in our food. The banana pudding just wasn't what it use to be. The fish was amazing and fresh and didn't have that "fishy" taste We all hate. Service was a little slow but this is expected with a new open. The corn pudding was great, as well as the okra! My son had the chicken legs but I would like to see a great kids menu at this location. The pool slaw unfortunately just wasn't the same. We will be returning at a later date when hopefully they have everything figured out. It was a great lunch but maybe we had our expectations way to high. Also to the staff, while I was there a very rude customer approached the counter and you handled it beautifully. Don't let rude people bring you down! I see great things for this place once you are rolling! However it will never be the bobby qs we all use to know and love but I'm open to a new level for...
