When I stopped by in the city of Coos Bay, Oregon, I was quite astonished by how beautiful the town was. I took a stroll around their old town and was enjoying the mild breeze of an overcast morning. Two weeks ago, prior to my Oregon Coast trip, I began searching for places to spend time in and grab a bite to eat. I found Kaffe 101 with over 30 years of being active in their cafe business. I was very intrigued so I decided to stop by for food after grabbing a delicious cup of coffee from So It Goes Coffeehouse, a block down from Kaffe 101.
Upon walking in, I saw that there was no one in the cafe besides the 3 staff members. I was a little surprised but I decided to order their "Special of the Day." On a wooden board, there was written "Waffles" followed by fruits, peanut butter, bacon and a price tag. I was pleasantly surprised that they were offering a nice variety of toppings for the order. However, after ordering, I was told that I had to choose from that list and that not everything was included. No where on the sign did it indicate that I had to choose a set number of toppings. I was disappointed with the false and unclear indication of what was actually included.
Let's put that factor to the side as it's miniscule compared to what occured next. Upon finding a place to sit at in the completely empty cafe, I was met with a large laminated paper sign that indicated "We are short staffed, so please bus your own table!" This is paraphrased as the text was longer on the paper sign. I then looked at all the other tables, and every single table had this big laminated sign. I tried to ignore this and began getting distracted by the constant microwave noises coming from their open kitchen. Deep down, I was really really praying that they weren't microwaving my waffles and that it was someone's online order. My prayers were definitely not listened to. The waffle I had ordered with the three basic toppings I had to choose from was in full placed in the microwave. Every single item on my plate was microwaved, including the banana pieces. The plate that was placed in front of me looked beyond horrific. A soggy, completely bland waffle was sitting in front of me. The peanut butter looked as if someone mixed a large quantity of water with the peanut butter, completely runny and liquid. The bananas were brown, with zero texture, a soggy mush. The honey got so hot from being microwaved that it completed got absorbed by the waffle and was drenched at the bottom of the waffle.
I remember that when I moved to this country, the best waffle my family was able to afford back then was the Eggo Waffle that you bought from the frozen aisle and then came home to place it in the toaster. Those things were absolutely phenomenal compared to the disaster that was placed in front of me. A soggy, drenched, and disgusting microwaved breakfast item that they did not have the actual audacity to make properly.
Now, looking back, I can see why "So It Goes Coffeehouse" was fully packed. They had the audacity to make their menu items on their grill, not a microwave, like you're being served a middle school cafeteria lunch. Actually, my middle school cafeteria lunch was better than this.
Truly disappointed. Oh, also remember when the paper sign indicated that they were short staffed, well, a fourth staff member came in and all of them began talking with each other in the kitchen about life stories. In my opinion, that doesn't indicate "short staffed." Especially when no one else is walking into the establishment to order anything, besides a cup of coffee. Utilizing your staff members effectively with genuine delegation of tasks and proper management skills will allow this place to actually flourish, rather than having laminated signs on the table. That's like putting a bandaid on a deep cut that actually needs stitches instead.
I'm very sad that this experience took place as I was genuinely pleased by the cleanliness of Kaffe 101, and their amazing WiFi speeds. However, when it comes to food, I would...

Read moreWe were visiting/staying overnight in a nearby hotel looking for a place to get some light brunch before exploring the area. We did not search to far before only driving a couple blocks from our Motel 6 to see the sign for "Kaffe 101" on our right. We had to park in a parking lot across the street. It looked pretty small and we wondered if they even had food since it had only a cup of coffee on their window. We entered and the aroma was overwhelming with not just coffee but fresh foods. There was a line of eager people and as we looked over the menu posted in front we were delighted to see they also offered lunch and breakfast! There were so many options we jumped to the back of the line twice to decide what to even order! My mother has celiac disease and I try to eat as little meat as possible and still the options were abundant. I wound up ordering the Greek salad which came out piled on top of a dinner size plate that left me full and satisfied! It was fresh and authentic with kalamata olives, peppercinis and feta cheese. We were also delighted that once we ordered we stepped into a MUCH larger space with a fireplace and quaint/ modern decor. It seemed like the perfect spot to grab a cup of Joe in the morning or meet up with friends for lunch. I highly recommend this place due to customer service, quality and a diverse menu filled...
