We're on a road trip and on Thanksgiving, almost all restaurants were closed. Good thing my husband remembered this place the last time he was in TX.
It's an unassuming place on a busy street but the food was good and our server was friendly and helpful.
I started with their shrimp empanada and they were very good. The dough was fluffy and the shrimp were perfectly cooked inside. Be careful, they can be very hot.
For the main dish I had the lonja zarandeado. At first I thought it was tilapia but it's redfish which is common in the gulf of Mexico. The flavor was phenomenal and the fish was cooked perfectly. I just wished they descaled it.
My husband had the carne asada. It was flavorful but a little too tough, but that's how he wants it. He also had a side of the kid's pasta. It must've been good because he was slurping the extra sauce :)
We also got something else to go. I had the paella del mar and my husband had the fajita. First off, they will give you a lot! Both of our order is worth 2 meals each.
The fajita, even reheated, didn't lose its flavor. The paella had a lot of seafood and not just rice, which I truly appreciate. The flavor was ok but maybe it would've been better eaten fresh.
This place is worth the stop and the prices are...
Read moreWell , no matter what you do , an old Whataburger is still an old fast food place. This is why I did not expect the menu or the prices. I ordered shrimp in garlic butter sauce , and it did have plenty of garlic and butter , but it felt more Italian than Mexican. There was no taste, really, and I love garlic and butter , but it needed ???? The rice was plain white rice with no flavor at all. The food was barely warm , but I did not even bother to send it back. I did bring half home ( to eat hot), and they do not serve tortilla chips . You get a basket with 4 cold but crisp tostada chips? A bowl of cheese ? Mixed with red onions and cilantro and 2 sauces 1 green ( hot) , 1 red mild , no taste. Most mexican seafood places in town offer tacos , enchiladas, etc. , not here if you want that don't stop. They were pricy for lunch, I thought . Even considering it is seafood, my shrimp were medium-sized, but it would have been much better if grilled before put in sauce( that may have been the added taste. The server was very nice and did check on us often. I might go back in a few months to try the shrimp cocktail. But I hope I like it...
Read moreFinally. A Mexican restaurant that isn’t a taqueria. This place is a very refreshing change of flavor in corpus and combined with quick and excellent service really made this place stand out. I’m a huge fan of ceviche and it eat any chance I get. Is it the best I’ve ever had? No. Not even close. But is it the worst? No. And compared to everything else in corpus, this place has almost all of them beat. Plenty of options besides seafood and I left wanting to try a lot more of the menu items. In a city filled with generic taquerias with the same 50 menu items, this place was a standout. It probably wont blow you away or change your life. But it’s flavorful, relaxed, and served good food. Not much more to ask for in corpus. And to the lady complaining about the “rice having very little flavor” yea it’s white rice dude. What did you expect? Anyways, yea come try this place. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I got one of the Ceviches. Overall pretty good apart from the imitation crab and frozen fish. But the sauce was good, and the salsas they give you on the side have a really really...
