Very small but very unique new sushi spot in Costa Mesa. Run by a sushi chef with decades of experience, Yubuya presents a casual sushi restaurant specializing in inari sushi. Inari are seasoned tofu pockets filled with season rice and a filling of your choice. The fish here is very fresh and high quality. I could easily see the fat streaks in the salmon, which is usually a good sign. I tried the spicy yellowtail (8.1/ 10), creamy onion salmon (8.8/10), soy marinated salmon (9.1/10), unagi (9.4/10), seared tuna (9.0/10), and seared salmon (8.6/10). Each roll was great. Some just really stood out to me, and it could be a matter of preference with fish. At $5 a piece, you get these hefty sized pieces that are very filling. I think I really only needed 2 or 3 to be satisfied, but my wife and I were excited to try them all. Definitely...

Located in a strip mall in Costa Mesa this unassuming Japanese fast casual place specializes in soy bean curd rice bowls with toppings from spicy tuna to Avocado.

My 1st and probably my last visit sadly came down to a few factors: Cost, Quality and Service.

Each of these guys were $6! They were 90-95% rice and 5% topping of choice. I opted for Spicy Tuna and Yellowtail.

Quality wise I couldn’t taste the spicy tuna and Yellowtail. The fish were too cold and the soy bean curd and rice were the dominating flavors and were extremely dense!

Service: I didn’t feel welcomed and that’s a shame, because when you’re paying $20! For something that’s mostly rice you feel taken advantage of.

Overall: Not coming back and it’s a shane because I want to see more unique small businesses succeed, but I can’t with...

I cannot say enough good things about this place! We were greeted on entry, had questions answered, and the staff was so polite and generous. It made my first time a very memorable experience, and that's just the service!

I can't oversell the spicy scallops enough. They were so tender and the sauce was a perfect pair (medium sauce). The Snow crab has probably ruined all other Snow Crab for me, because I'm not sure I'll ever get it as good as I did while here.

Everything we had was something I would want to order again. The rice used, the tofu pockets used, the service, the atmosphere, and the location's parking availability are all reasons that we will be returning.

If you have the chance to order from here, and are reading this review, look no further. You've found...

Best Yubu in OC & LA is located here in Costa Mesa. Sweet tender tofu blankets surrounding fresh and delightful fish. Now added to all that, it’s sitting on a fluffious pillow of rice. Tell me that doesn't sound absolutely gorgeous. Only someone who hates peace and food would not like these. Inside you’ll find the wonderful chef himself hand crafting each individual yubu with care. They offer options of donburi, and raw, seared, vegan yubu fillings to please the entire family bloodline. The yubu hype is NOW! come and get it, don’t fall behind. The only negative is that you can’t get them 7 days a week. Closed Sunday. Let chef rest. Update: Still 11/10 and now with nigiri and sashimi on menu.

all of the good reviews are true! this place was FIRE. i had the lunch special with udon and added 2 yubus (unagi, creamy onion, seared salmon, and spicy shrimp). my total with the coupon online ($5 off first order) came out to about $20. talk about money well spent. the yubus are so flavorful, the fish and shrimp were fresh, and all of the toppings complimented each yubu perfectly. even though they’re small, they’re really filling. the staff was also really kind and attentive. 10/10 recommend, i think this may be my new favorite spot. i want to go back and try every flavor!

A little gem in Costa Mesa — the seasoned rice was the bomb! Topped it with fresh fish and you really can’t go wrong. So far, I’ve tried three yubus: albacore, yellowtail, and spicy tuna — all solid picks. Bonus: they throw in a free miso soup. Can’t wait to try the rest of the yubus! Dine-in space is tiny — maybe 8 to 10 people max if you’re packed in. Best to order takeout.
