I finally got in to try Grannie's. This little gem has been in Crystal River for a very long time. Unfortunately, my schedule previously never met to with their open hours. Recently they changed it so they're open until 6pm on weekends and open 7 days a week (usually until 2pm). I went in because they didn't look to packed (if you've ever driven by, you know they're almost always packed), and today's special was listed as AUCE fried chicken. Sadly, when I cut there, they were out of chicken. They were very apologetic, and looking over the menu, I saw they offered AUCE pollock daily with 3 sides. I decided to go with fish. Their fish is served up fried, blackened, and I forget the third eat they prep it for you. I opted to start with the blackened. I had asked the server if they season it and then seat it on a flat to griddle. She said they did, and I was quite happy about this as I've been to one too many places that steam or bake it, then throw some seasoning on, trying to pass it off as blackened. I was very happy with my voice. Pollock is a flaky white fish that is very easy to over cook. Grannie's served it up right. It was hot, flaky, and moist with the right amount of seasoning seared on, and tasted quite delicious. I picked for my sides mashed potatoes, green beans, and cottage cheese. The mashed potatoes lacked a little bit of seasoning, and tasted like they were made from Idahoan spuds. The green beans were very hot and tasted great. Cottage cheese was.. well cottage cheese.
I also tried their fried pollock, and I must say I was quite surprised. Again, it was lightly seasoned, and cooked perfectly. I was told the lightly battery it, and that's a wonderful way to get fish. Too many places put on too much batter or breading, but not here.
The lady who served me was very friendly, attentive, and courteous. She answered all my questions about the food, displaying an excellent knowledge of their menu. From what I saw, all of the other servers were just as friendly and outgoing. It seemed like except for me, they knew just about everyone who came through the door. That's always a good sign the food will be fairly good.
Menu has a good variety, and prices are reasonable. If you live in Crystal River, or nearby, you should...
Read moreGrannie's is what I call a diner style restaurant. Boths and tables with a dining counter as well. I ordered the two egg combo with bacon, home fries, and a biscuit. My dining partner shared some biscuits and gravy with me as well.
When taking our order the server asked if I wanted crispy bacon or regular. I celebrated the question as I am a crispy bacon girl. I do not appreciate soft cooked fat on bacon.
The eggs were scrambled fluffy and cook all the way through. So many restaurants we have been to have runny scrambled eggs. 🤢 The bacon 🥓 was indeed crispy without being burnt and I loved every bite. The home fries were delightfully seasoned, crispy on the edges and smothered inside. The biscuits were tender, fluffy inside, flakey outside, and such a wonderful butter 🧈 taste I really didn't need honey. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy had just a touch of too much salt, but was definitely homemade, and we both enjoyed the flavor. There wasn't so much salt that we couldn't eat it. It was just a smidge on the over salted line.
Service: Upon entering Grannie's were greeted and told to sit anywhere we wanted. Our server came over immediately to take our drink orders. Very quickly she was back with drinks and asked if we had any questions or needed more time. We placed our order and again she returned quickly with the biscuit and toast. A few short minutes later she returned with our meals. Our server checked with us no less than four times asking how our meals were, if we needed refills, and refilling coffee and tea. Once we finished she asked if we needed togo boxes or cups and if we wanted to order desserts. We declined desserts and she immediately pulled out the check. She told us not to hurry and stay as long as we needed. We both enjoyed Grannie's and will definitely be back whenever we are...
Read moreI went in about 1230 pm A busy time mind you, I say at the counter. I ordered steak and eggs which was on special for 13.99 and a glass of tea. My waitress was conversational and friendly. My steak was cooked medium rare as requested. My eggs were a little over cooked.. My food was delivered without my toast and without asking if I needed anything. Which I in fact did need A1 sauce. A waitress that was not the original walked by and said my toast would be right up. I observed her go to the toaster and handle my toast with her bare hands after wiping her cheek with the same hand. I unwrapped my silver wear and discovered the fork , knife, and spoon all had a lot of stuck on particles of food on them still. My original waitress comes by I ask for clean silver wear and A1. She promptly obliges my request. The second set of silver wear was unwrapped to find the knife and spoon badly stained and some slight food particles on them but the fork was clean. I started to pick at my home fries with my fork. I could also observe the kitchen from my seat and noticed the cooks were handling various types of food all without gloves or hand washing. I asked for my bill , not eating anymore. I get my bill and it's 18.00 even. Since my special was 13.99 that means a glass of tea was 4 bucks!!
That was my experience with...
