Beard Papa’s Cupertino – The Best Cream Puffs in the Bay Area

I have been visiting Beard Papa’s in Cupertino since they first opened, and it continues to be one of my favorite dessert spots in the South Bay. The cream puffs here showcase true Japanese artistry, with light, flaky shells and silky custard fillings that taste fresh and balanced. Since I prefer desserts that are not overly sweet, I usually stick with the classics, but I also appreciate how they offer creative seasonal shells and fillings to cater to different palates.

Every shell is baked fresh each morning, and each puff is filled to order, which makes all the difference in taste and texture. The store also offers a simple loyalty program tied to your phone number, plus a complimentary cream puff on your birthday with purchase. It is important to note that these cream puffs are best enjoyed the same day. After about 12 hours, the shell can lose its crispness and the flavor and texture shift, so keep that in mind if you plan to buy a half-dozen or a dozen at a discount.

Must-Try Desserts at Beard Papa’s Cupertino

Mini Puffs (6 pieces) ($7.35) – 4.8/5 Perfect for sharing, with a satisfying shell-to-cream ratio. I always choose the vanilla filling, which never disappoints.

Original Shell with Vanilla Filling ($4.40) – 5/5 The signature choice and my favorite. The puff has a golden, crunchy exterior with a soft croissant-like interior, and the vanilla custard has just the right level of creaminess and viscosity. A flawless pairing.

Original Shell with Green Tea Filling ($4.40) – 4/5 For green tea fans, this filling has a noticeable matcha flavor mixed with the vanilla cream. While it is refreshing, I personally prefer the classic vanilla, as the texture of the green tea version is thicker and richer.

Original Shell with Chocolate Filling ($4.40) – 3/5 The chocolate filling is bold in cacao flavor, but the texture is the thickest compared to the others, and it leaves the mouth a little dry. Worth trying if you love chocolate, though not my favorite.

Crème Brûlée with Vanilla Filling ($5.40) – 5/5 A delightful twist on a classic dessert. The caramelized top adds a delicate crunch that pairs beautifully with the creamy vanilla custard. I always grab one of these if they are available.

Chocolate Fondant ($4.90) – 2/5 This was a miss for me. The cake was dry and too rich in flavor. Beard Papa’s is best enjoyed for its cream puffs, and I recommend skipping the other baked goods.

Final Thoughts Beard Papa’s in Cupertino remains a true gem for dessert lovers. While the ambiance of the shop feels a bit less polished than it once did, the quality of the cream puffs has never wavered. The fact that this location survived the pandemic speaks to the loyalty of its customers and the excellence of its products. If you are searching for the best cream puffs in Cupertino or the Bay Area, this is the...

Really bad service! I had dinner in the plaza where beard papa’s is located, and attempted to call multiple times find out what flavors were available, but no one answered. I decided to walk over thinking they might be busy, only to find out that the store only had one customer inside waiting. One of the girls was fulfilling his order, while the other was just standing there talking to her with one hand in her pocket. So I asked one of them what flavors were available, and instead of telling me, she just nods her head over to a sign, then continues her conversation with her coworker. The only reason I ask what flavors are available is because I’ve been to the milpitas location several times where not all of the posted flavors were available, so I just wanted to confirm. Anyway, I told her I wanted to order, and the one with her hand in her pocket struts over and just stares at me with that hand still in her pocket. I placed my order and told her I was paying with card. She points to the machine, and I put my card in.. nothing happens.. so I wait.. a few moments pass and the customer that was waiting, NOT the employee, tells me the card machine isn’t reading. So I then asked her if it was working and she shrugs.. I gave up and told her I would pay cash instead. It’s frustrating to have to deal with workers who don’t want to or care to be there. I don’t think I will be coming back to this...

I hope I can give it as 0 star. First of all, I was the only one In the store when I ordered my dish, I understand they were working on some online orders, so I was waiting in the store. They suppose to print out my order, put it on their glass window so they can prepare it according to the printout. It turns out they didn’t print out my order, nor my receipt. they just totally forgot my order, though I was waiting just in front of them.

A few mins later, the girl asked me what did I order, I told them with patience. Of course they cannot find my order bc they didn’t print it. Then they asked me again, I told them 2nd time. A min later, they just asked me again. I was still the only one waiting in store and just ordered 2 items, and I have been asked 3 times. I lost my patience and told them I just ordered and was the last one ordered. Then the girl became mad at me and asked me”do you know what is double check, do you go to restaurant?” I told her no one printed my order, and I saw you were looking for my order, and you didn’t find it. She denied their problem and told me it is just double check and it will/suppose to be printed out later. I had very bad experience with them, rude and not professional. So...

Ok so this is a review of Beard Papa’s Cream puffs. I invited a few friends over this weekend for a BBQ. A childhood friend of mine who just moved back to the Bay Area from New York brought dessert. He stopped by Beard Papa’s and picked up 8 beautiful Cream puffs. He said that they had 3 different flavor fillings, Vanilla, crème brûlée and Green tea. He opted for the Vanilla and crème brûlée. All the puffs are made fresh and the fillings are pumped in. The box the puffs come in puts a smile on my face (see pics) all the puffs are individually put to bed in an envelope style wrapping. Now for the good part, the puffs pastry’s are simply beautiful, light, airy and perfectly baked. (Flavor was probably the best I’ve had) the Vanilla cream though perfectly executed in consistency lacked the vanilla flavor I was so wanted to experience. The crème brûlée filling is the same vanilla filling pumped in with a small pocket of the crème brûlée filling underneath. The flavor of the crème brûlée is amazing but I didn’t get it in every bite unfortunately. What I got was an occasional flavor of crème brûlée with an over whelming amount of their vanilla filling.

I got mango, chocolate, and vanilla. To me , chocolate was meh, it can be better. I had lots of hope in the mango flavor when I saw it, and especially "limited weekend only" sign made it extra special... I was so disappointed with my first bite. It tasted like raw / unripe mango. No good. Not smooth. They should have used ripe yellow manila mango, even for a higher price. Vanilla flavor was the best of all. I also like their cookie crunch puff because it was freshly baked , so it tasted great. Not too sweet either, and crunchy on top. If you go here, recommend to stick with vanilla flavor and cookie crunch if you like.

Best cream puffs ever. The filling is super creamy, and there's always a weekly rotation of a different flavor. Regularly there's vanilla, maccha, and chocolate. Definitely get vanilla and green tea they're the best. Chocolate might be good too but I'm just not a huge fan of milk chocolate in general. The customer service here is also amazing. If you go and happen to be served by Olivia you're 2000% lucky. Asked for opinions on the deserts other than cream puffs and got good answers. Trust this girl's taste 👌👌. If you happen to go when they have the creme brulee flavor, that one's pretty hot so definitely try it.
