Sloppy dining room, no soap in the restroom, average selection.
No soap in the bathroom? That's egregious - it looked like it'd been dry for awhile.
First impression was sloppiness - walking in and seeing a very untidy sushi bar, no one greeted me so I sat myself and grabbed a menu. The selections on the menu are average - nothing special, but not even salmon belly which is sad. Service was below average - I turned in an order with a sashimi sampler, no rice roll and 3 sashimi dishes. Two tables were sat in the restaurant and yet it took 21 minutes to get the first item which is highly unusual for any sushi place. I did see a lot of to-go orders being made and put into bags and maybe they don't care about a customer sitting at the bar as much as U er Eats - who knows - I just know that I'm normally given something much much much much quicker without watching a revolving door on a toaster oven. They use a small cheap toaster oven right at the back of the bar which is a bad look if you want to pretend you're a quality place. Ding! Ding! Check out the picture and decide if you think they are cleaned every day. Or ever?
Service - the server actually took my iPhone early on and I didn't realize it for a bit - went to my car thinking I had maybe left it there. It wasn't in my car. I came back in and asked her about it and we found it under a napkin and menu she had whisked away from me when I placed my order. I also asked her about Sapporo vs Kirin Ichiban on which was fresher. She replied, "they're both good". The bottle of Sapporo I received had an October 2024 date on it. It's March 2025. No dirty dishes were picked up at all during my stay - I'll include a picture of my area when my check was dropped off and I waited for my card to be rung as they took care of more take out orders.
Sushi - first dish was the snapper and salmon sashimi. The snapper tasted tired - not severely off but definitely not fresh with hints of fridge burn and age. Salmon was fine but again, average - on par with grocery store sushi.
Sashimi sampler A - 8 pieces. But it wasn't sashimi - piece of fake Krab and a cooked shrimp were included. I asked the waitress and she said their customers liked it and I explained that it still says sashimi on the menu so that's what I expected.
Eel - looked nice. But couldn't taste it - really hard to judge as it was absolutely overwhelmed in their crazy thick sauce. Normally that tells me the meat wasn't great but I can't say for sure - just crazily heavy handed on the sauce. Back off! Let the eel speak for itself!
Presentation of sushi - decent - sushi places generally nail this and I give Sushi Maku a solid average with nothing jumping out negatively or positively over most places. Normal touches and careful lining up of things
Obviously I've had high end sushi several times and it's confusing for me to see this place with over a 4 star rating when a place way way better is similarly rated so I have to correct for that. The lack of decent choice in sashimi automatically starts you at a 4, sloppiness cost a half point. The bathroom cost a full point - no soap? Really? And false advertising on sashimi? Yeah, this place is average but gets knocked down to two stars for the bathroom and false advertising. I never order sashimi to get cooked shrimp and fake krab.
I love sushi - I want to clear the confusion to people on the difference so average and below average places need low ratings. Above average places need high ratings. Help educate with reality. This is not a 4+ star place in any way. Go...
Read moreWaited till my second lunchtime experience to write this review to attempt to ensure a consistent experience. The Sushi was very nice and tasty and the special for lunch is a really good price for what you get. They tend to put crunchy stuff and eel sauce on everything but that makes it very tasty. The "damn good roll" is just that it is the best I've ever had. The cowboy roll is pretty nice with crunchy sweet potato strings on top. The basic California roll is okay. Miso soup is above average, the salad is nice as the dressing is a bit different from all the other sushi places using like a weird Ginger mix for their salad dressing. My buddy had the cucumber salad and let me have a taste, which is a little off-putting at first but actually quite rather enjoyable once you have a few bites. In the attached pictures with the plate that has the Wasabi on the right is the hurricane roll on the right and the love roll on the left. In the picture with the Wasabi on the plate on the left the roll at the top left is the cowboy with the sweet potato crunchy bits and the bottom right is the damn good roll. Make sure you order the damn good roll no matter what you do. You will not be disappointed I honestly didn't want to do a review of this place because I want to keep it a secret but oh well the gig is up the secret is out have fun at this place that's been here a little bit but tucked away like a...
Read moreI visited this restaurant on 6/28/21 & ordered combination rice without shrimp because I’m allergic to it. The server then puts my order in & tells me how long it’ll be. So I sit & wait. Mind you, online it says her location closed at 10pm. I was there around 8:30ish & then a couple more people came in around 8:50ish & the server was acting irritated at the guests coming in & claiming they closed at 9:30pm. I received my order & left… when I got home I opened my plate & saw nothing out of the ordinary until I began eating & ran into a couple of pieces of shrimp hidden under my rice. Given that I got home & started eating by the time they closed from when I got my order & left… I didn’t call that night because I knew I’d get no answer. So I called the next day & expressed my concerns with the server from the night before & she acted as if she didn’t care, very insensitive & nonchalant. She initially responded to me & said, “Wow” very dryly. I had to reiterate the fact that her accident could’ve killed me & it wasn’t something to be taken lightly. She then decided to give a dry “I’m sorry”, once again not genuine. She never offered anything to fix & make up for their mistake nor did she take ownership of the situation. I will never visit this establishment again. The sad thing is, this visit was my first visit to there and...
