I spend two weeks in Dana Point every year to go fishing and whale watching and so forth. Several years ago I ate a steak sandwich at the brig restaurant. It was not good. Today I gave the brig a second chance. I ordered the fish and chips. They were the best fish and chips I've had ever in my life. A few nights ago I ordered fish and chips at Jimmy's across Dana Point Harbor Drive. I could have lubed my truck with the amount of oil that was dripping out of the poorly cooked and amateuriously breaded fish. The brig is by far the better choice for this dish. The coleslaw at the brig is also many magnitudes better than Jimmy's. By the way El Torito the other night was disappointing. The appetizers were decent but the fish tacos were a joke. I caught my bluefin tuna and thresher shark of the strip so I am happy no matter the food. I will say that the people in Dana Point at the Marina Inn are exceptional. The the hotels getting a little old but it's a Beach Hotel and my stay was as pleasant as ever. I hope they don't turn this whole Harbor into a new word for me bougie area. We already have a Newport we don't...
Read more4.75 stars...I've been going here for years. It has the older comfortable neighborhood family-friendly coffee shop atmosphere. The owners , Kevin and Linda, and their staff are very friendly and if you chose carefully the food can be great. A few items are blan as stated in some of the other notes but that's not the norm. Usually the seniors get the liver and onions and my mom loved it and was glad for the lighter seasoning. They know their 5pm target market. If you look at what you get and the location, the pricing is not high. If you want tasty lunch food then order the shrimp and avocado quesadilla or the grilled albacore melt sandwich. You wil be stuffed and have food coma. The breakfasts, are very yummy. nice and BIG and yes, it is usually packed on Sunday and Saturday mornings. The only place where they could improve would be the coffee. it's kinda okay but i suppose if it were terrific, we'd never leave. In the afternoon yes, it 's slow for a while which makes it a perfect place for business or downtime with friends meetings. You can hear your partners and there is a level of...
Read moreSo the food was okay but the problem is the price of that food. I had the eggs Benedict which just used a piece of ham instead of a proper Canadian bacon. It makes it too salty. The eggs were well poached and the hollandaise sauce was good. But it was $27 which is just outrageous for what it is and in a diner that has not been renovated since the 1990’s is my guess. Just really disappointing having just come from Japan where meals were amazing and priced so well that it was really better than cooking. Is it the fault of the owner. Probably not but it still just feels like being ripped off when a meal for 2 is over $60 at something akin to Denny’s. It makes me sad. Service was prompt and friendly however 15% tip on a not worth it $60 meal just doesn’t add up to anything reasonable. Since staff make higher wages tipping has to change from a percentage to something reasonable when exceptional service is provided. The service was good but nothing exceptional. Travel has allowed me a new perspective. The system here in the US is...
