I want to support and hype up little diners like this but I must genuinely warn anyone away from eating here. Between the stench that clung to me and the bowel sickness that lingered the entire day, no amount of rustic charm is worth it.
The food here appeared to be good and affordable. People rave about this place so I wanted to try it. It takes a long time to come. servers were also super friendly. we stuck it out for these reasons.
This place, however, is utterly filthy. Like, genuinely scary dirty. I have no idea how they are passing a health inspection. you could scrape crud off the walls with a spatula. The tables and counters and booths and floors are grimy beyond belief. The walls are yellow and the air is heavy with grease and smoke. The wall next to the booth was covered in flecks of food and dirt, the dish fill of creamer was dirty, the ice machine had its door hanging open the entire meal and was grimy and filthy, the ceiling and walls in the grill area were brown and yellow with old grease and smoke. Everything was covered in a thick funk. I didnât even bother with the bathroom, despite having to get to one urgently after finishing my meal. I had to shower and change my clothes after eating here because I stunk so bad. I was also seated close to the door, and even that was no help with the air quality and stink.
Itâs way beyond a âgreasy spoonâ, this place is a disaster. Gordon Ramsey would faint. I have no idea how they continue operating and remain open with these conditions.
Giving the food three stars because it was cheap and tasty even if it...
Read moreThe Rocks Anchor Grill is one of those Davenport restaurants that have been around for ages, with decor that might have come with the place, a funky layout, creaky floors, and surprising homey comfort. You don't go there because of the atmosphere, though--you go there (with or without family or friends) to eat good food in your favorite neighborhood diner, even if you don't actually live in the neighborhood.
The portions are huge, and the prices are surprisingly low. I've never been disappointed in a menu choice here, but the pancakes are amazing. They're huge (one usually fills me up, and I'm not a light eater), thick, and fluffy, and sweet enough that you might not need syrup (though it's the real maple stuff, so maybe a little).
The staff is friendly and always on the go. Even so, there is a wait for food sometimes; the kitchen staff is a single skilled lady with only two hands, and I've never seen this place less than nearly full. But the wait is totally worth it, especially if you order...
Read moreAnchor grill is a true purists neighborhood grill for cooked-to-order breakfast, lunch or dinner. Nothing fancy at all here, some cliches hanging on the wall, waitress and cook in jeans, t-shirts and sandals and simple foods served promptly and in a friendly way. A great place to grab a quick bite alone or with a friend. This is NOT wheelchair friendly, as you have to go up a step to use the one restroom available to customers and the aisle down the center of the place between booths and counter is fairly narrow. There is a separate room for wheelchair seating at some freestanding tables however. I've never been disappointed with food or service here. In fact I heard the cook pounding out my just-cut pork tenderloin in the kitchen before breading and frying it. Now that's to-order cooking. All the plates are put together right out in customer's view. I watched the chicken(or tuna) salad get made for a sandwich the guy next to me ordered. Great place as long as you're not expecting any...
