We were really excited to eat here because there wasn't anything close to where we live for sushi and nothing at all for ramen until kirin opened up a few years back. Finally stopped in and wasn't impressed.
The seaweed salad was super fishy, and reminded me of what I imagine rotten fish oil added to a seaweed salad would taste like. It's our daughter's favorite type of salad and we're all very familiar with a variety of versions of it. There was definitely something off about the salad.
The spicy ramen was hardly what someone who orders spicy food would consider to be spicy, and the extra side of spice our son ordered ended up simply being a saucer of Sriracha. Understandably, he was expecting the typical chili flake medley in oil, or even potentially a dry powder spice. The lack of spice of the spicy ramen was disappointing.
I ordered shoyu ramen with bamboo shoots added, and bamboo shoots were already included in the spicy ramen my son ordered. We both happened to take a bite of the bamboo in our soup at the same time, and, nearly in unison, started verbalizing our experience, asking what in the world was wrong with the bamboo and commenting on how it tasted putrid.
I've eaten bamboo shoots many, many times throughout the last four decades, and at copious places throughout the US. I am aware that the naturally bitter taste of bamboo can shine when not properly prepared, or in the case of menma, there's an expected fermented element to the flavor. This was neither. The bamboo was floppy, brown, slightly slimy, with a smell and taste of complete rotten vegetation. Without question, the bamboo shoots used were well past their expiration date.
Since the bamboo was sitting on the top layer, we both immediately took it out of our bowls so we could attempt at eating the rest of our soup. I made the mistake of touching a piece with my hand and my fingers instantly stunk. We kindly let the waitress know that the bamboo had gone bad. She came back a few minutes later and said the chef informed her that the shoots inherently have a slightly bitter smell from being pickled. I can assure you with certainty, however, that these shoots were definitely expired, with no flavor of pickling to them whatsoever.
If there were only one thing that went wrong, I probably would've written it off, but there were simply too many red flags at once for me to have the desire to try...
Read moreOn the expensive side $77.00. Most of the food had a decent taste. The California roll the avocado was way too mushy and the kirin roll i will pass on this next time. The Katsu chicken, hibachi steak and a pork Ramen bowl were good. Update: Went back 9/28/2022 My husband had the Teriyaki steak dinner and said it was delicious. I ordered the Futo Maki Rolls plus the Gyoza appetizer and it was very good. We dined in this time and had a very sweet waitress. I am so glad we had a much better meal this time. Thank you. Update #2 02/26/2023 My husband and I had dinner and appetizers here tonight. It was not busy at all only one other table. I am a little disappointed again. My husband ordered the hibachi steak dinner and I order the steak and chicken hibachi dinner. My husband's dinner minus fried rice came out very quickly even before our 2 appetizers. He then received his fried rice separately while I am still waiting for my dinner. Our gyoza appetizers arrive and I am still wondering where is my dinner? My husband tried to wait to eat his meal because I still didn't receive mine. I told him to go ahead because his was getting cold. He finally put his fork down because he definitely would have been finished before I even received mine. The food came out in such a funky order and no rush. It will be awhile before we come back. Oh when I did receive my food the top layer of food was steaming hot and underneath was just warm. The flavor of the food is delicious but service is spotty. Ps. I know this is being petty but our waitress made a horrible annoying sound by not picking up her feet to walk. She slid them across the floor. Ugh. Swish, ...
