Sushi Sumo — Restaurant in Decatur

One word: wow! I was very pleased with my experience at Sushi Sumo.

After I finished work for the day in Decatur, I wanted to try somewhere local for lunch. This place has been in my bookmarks for a while and wasn't too far from my location, so off I went!

They were doing a brisk enough business at around 1 PM. The location is a tiny bit off the beaten path with a couple other nondescript businesses in a small shopping center. Don't be fooled, though -- the food and service was exceptional.

Upon entering, I was politely encouraged to sit wherever I'd like. They have a cute outdoor patio but I decided to sit inside as it was chilly out. The interior has a nice, understated, traditionally Japanese restaurant vibe to it. You can see the chef making rolls behind the counter, which is fun.

The menu has a large selection of mostly Japanese dishes, but there are a couple of Korean options as well. Embarrassingly, I'm not yet a sushi-eater and I've been desperately missing my usual Korean spot in Huntsville ever since it closed (shout-out to Big Oh's!), and so I couldn't help but decide on their gyoza bowl. This is a bit like a Korean rice bowl, but with gyoza! You can also get the more standard beef, chicken, or veggies. Bowls come with your choice of steamed or fried rice, lettuce, glass noodles, and your protein/entree of choice, along with your sauce(s) of choice, like Korean bbq sauce or spicy mayo.

My gyoza bowl was absolutely delicious. The gyoza were crispy, savory, and tender on the inside. The fried rice had the perfect smokiness and texture. The glass noodles were a unique addition for me and I enjoyed their chewy bounciness. Only a small amount of sauce is drizzled on top when the bowl is delivered; the rest is left up to you in a small cup. I like the amount of control this affords you - although I did use all my sauce eventually. The spicy mayo was not particularly spicy (then again, spicy mayo is almost an oxymoron, right? lol), but I did enjoy the nice zing and creaminess it brought.

Service was exceptional, too -- very friendly, prompt but not pushy, and attentive. My lunch was, I thought, quite affordable for the portion size and quality, at under $20 for my meal, a Pepsi, and tip. I didn't have any gyoza leftover but there was enough rice and greens left for a small serving to-go if I'd been so inclined. One final last nice feature worth mentioning is that the check can be paid by scanning the QR code on the receipt. This allows for a quicker exit. However, if you're not tech-savvy or don't feel comfy doing so, you can always opt to pay at the counter.

Edited/updated before I even posted the final review: brought my parents and husband out to Decatur to see the cranes at Wheeler and I enjoyed this place so much I drug them here to try it only like 2-3 weeks after my first visit. It was just as delightful the second time. My dad, who is traditionally a bit averse to pretty much all varieties of Asian cuisine (idk why - just not much experience with it, I guess) even loved it -- enough that he said he'd return to Decatur just to visit Sushi Sumo again. AMAZINGLY high praise. Honestly, this may just be my favorite Japanese restaurant that I've tried in north Alabama so far. I'm glad work brings me out here enough that I'm sure I'll get to visit again...

An absolute amazing experience. 5 out of five stars all day long!

The atmosphere was amazing,The music was wonderful and relaxing very solid playlist.

The owner, staff, and hostess were all extremely polite saying hello and welcome when walking in, very professional and very attentive did not go long at all without a full glass and being asked if we needed anything.

This was my wife and I first time coming here after hearing good things from our friend Toney , we brought our baby girl who is almost 2 and she absolutely LOVED the food just as much as we did!

We started off with two house ginger salads and let me tell you these were the best ginger salads that me and my wife have ever had!

The ginger sauce was house made and thick and just delicious and the salad contents itself were all so fresh and refreshing you could tell by the taste and texture.

The tonkotsu ramen 🍜 is amazing! So delicious and just good for the soul I ordered 4 extra egg slices with mine, it had awesome slices of pork , mushrooms, and seemed like pickled onions or ginger but they were soooooo good!

The next time we come I will order the same but ask for it to be a little spicier but overall it was still amazing and full of flavor!

My wife got the tempura sushi roll and it was extremely good we ordered a kids chicken bowl and she couldn't get enough of it and the eggs from my tonkotsu ramen she wanted everyone or them haha.

Whoever made the sweet tea knew what they were doing that was some down south amazing sweet tea it was delicious! I drank around 4-5 glasses and got one to go!

I absolutely love this place now and the food quality and customer care speaks for it self.

Now we don't have to drive all the way to Madison or Huntsville to get some good sushi or ramen! I will be trying the spicy miso next time as well!!

An excellent little Japanese bistro, tucked unobtrusively out of the way in a small strip mall, houses one of the best sushi and Ramen spots I've had the pleasure of enjoying since the last time I visited Japan. They have foodie inspired fusion offerings like the excellent take on jalapeño poppers (picture attached) as well as classics like gyoza, edamame, and tonkatsu Ramen. I had the aforementioned poppers, spicy miso Ramen, and their specialty "scream" roll. Each was unique and utterly enjoyable in flavor, texture, presentation, and overall experience. The Ramen was delicious, with layers and complex flavors from the savory-sweet pork to the tangy pickled ginger. And the variety of textures was captivating with the soft boiled egg complimented by the crisp slices of scallion all nestled in the warm and soothing texture of perfectly done noodles. The Scream roll was an amalgamation of fish, vegetables, rice and sauces that excited and invigorated the palate. I thought the addition of the jalapeño to the roll was truly inspired. I will be back again and again and again. This is definitely one of Decatur's best kept...
