Ken and I fed our souls this week with some of the best food outside of his mamma's cooking.
And the owners treat us like family!
Taste of Soul in DeLand is a family-owned, fast-casual restaurant specializing in traditional Southern soul food, including highly-praised items like fried chicken, mac & cheese, and oxtails.
Founded by Corey and Yvette Williams, the restaurant aims to create a family-oriented atmosphere with authentic, flavorful dishes passed down through generations and excellent customer service.
Ken loves the fried chicken, of course, but often gets the shrimp. $13 for the biggest shrimp, fries, and slaw.
Me? I get something different every time. Sometimes the 11-dollar fried chicken dinner, other times the 8-dollar vegetable-only meal, but this night was the $13 smothered pork chops, and you know the gravy is the bomb!
We spent less than 30 bucks and even had enough to take home for later!
Win-win!
You better getch you some! Take our word for it! Don't miss out on the 'Party Punch'. Ken and I are addicted to the sweet drink!

Read moreI'm gonna give it a three for now only because I didn't have a platter. Very clean. Restrooms were too. Nice seating area. Casual without looking cheap. One server, a male was patient and accommodating. I didn't care for the entrée choices that day but did try the Mac and cheese. It wasn't like mine or my mom's...but more like that best friend that buy her cheese from save a lot. I'm not saying it's bad. Was love in it, but it was actually too greasy because it is made with a lot of cheese. I prefer a little crisp to mine. Corn bread was dense, but dry. It was good so it just comes down to preference. Some like it dense to soak up that gravy and stuff. Some like it moist and sweet almost like a dessert. The cake was delicious. It was some pink lemonade cake. 🍰 moist and sweet. The girl behind the counter did nothing to appreciate my obvious first time experience. And that left a bad impression from a customer service standpoint. I wouldn't revisit because of that. But again, I'm funny that way. I just miss the vibe soul food gives people and she did not embody that home feeling at all. It's like going to McDonald's and getting a mcRib or something. Food I tried was good..lack of the fourth star was due to...

The food is phenomenal, and stick to your ribs good. I don't think there has been a meal I didn't like here. The portions are hefty, the flavor is great and options remind me of family dinners sitting around the table or picnic table. I recommend coming on Fridays for the rib plate, or trying the meatloaf and gravy. You can never go wrong with Fried Chicken, and the smothered pork chops are a southern favorite that brings me back to my days in Baton Rouge. The mac n cheese is a cheesy baked side of perfection, and if you are lucky enough to go on a day when they have cabbage, you will have my envy. Bring and appetite and a bib because it can get messy and finger licking good. My only gripe is the place is served cafeteria style. This gets you your food fast, and lets you see all that you can choose from, but I don't like to be reminded of my days in elementary school. But don't let the presentation fool you, it definitely doesn't taste like your cafeteria from...
