After anticipating a return visit from the previous year, we were expecting a great experience like before—Not so this time! When we arrived, the host/greeter barely said two words, had a terrible attitude, and was looking at the tablet while on the phone. She barely acknowledged us. When she hung up the phone, she grabbed some menus, and I guess we were expected to follow her. She seemed like we were bothering her--still don't know what her deal was. Anyway, she put us at a table in the corner—no big deal. The waitress initially seemed pleasant, but she messed up our order. We ordered an appetizer, and I am fairly certain we were clear about what we ordered because we had some questions before we decided, and it looked like she was writing it down, because she was nodding while writing (so we thought). Approximately 10 minutes later, our entrees came out. The server who brought the food was asking who had what, and my family and I were a bit confused. He seemed a bit irked that we were hesitant—maybe he wanted to get back to wherever, but we were expecting the appetizer and not the entrees. We asked about the appetizer, and he said we had to talk to our waiter. Fair enough—but for the “upscale” restaurant they are trying to be, the service was lackluster. He must have relayed our concern to our server. Fast forward a few minutes, and our server appears and kind of apologizes. She said that she misunderstood, which is weird because we had a whole conversation about the order. She tried to blame us for not being clear. In retrospect, she never repeated or confirmed our order (which is usually pretty standard). Anyway, the food was pretty decent, but my wife had to ask a couple of times for some things. The food is a bit overpriced, and usually I don't mind if the service is good. It didn’t feel like we mattered because our waiter didn’t check on us as frequently as we saw other tables. At the end, she asked if we wanted dessert, but it didn’t feel genuine, kind of like she was expecting or hoping for us to say no—I just asked for the check. She did the electronic thing with my card, and I remember selecting the text message option for the receipt because I typed my phone number into the machine. I didn't receive the text. Sadly, I will probably not return, which is too bad because my family enjoyed the food. I was hoping to be a regular for years to come, but I simply refuse to pay for bad service. Oh, in case management cares, I have the table receipt from when they initially brought the check (I don’t have the customer copy). It has the table # and server on it. Oh, by the way—the server we had the first time we visited was excellent. She greeted us, asked us if we had been there before, and really made us feel welcome. I wish I remembered her name because I would have given her another tip instead. She set the bar for us to be excited to return, but this recent visit--everyone dropped the...
Read moreUnderstaffed and easily some of the worst food I’ve ever had. Went in with already low expectations, an upscale Mexican restaurant in a beach town offering cookie cutter Mexican dishes for triple the price of what you can get at an excellent taco stand, what more can you expect? It was like watching a trailer knowing the movie is going to be bad and the movie is actually worse. A literal 2 hour snooze fest because that’s how long it took from arriving there and taking the last bite of our meals and I didn’t even eat half of it.
We made reservations and when we arrived 5 minutes early the host tells us that we had to wait because they didn’t actually have a table for us. Which instantly reminded my friend of a Seinfeld episode where Seinfeld says, “Anybody can take a reservation, it’s the holding of the reservation.” With high hopes, I just laughed it off because the food will be okay and it’ll come in a timely manner, right? Nope.
We waited 20 minutes for a table, 30 minutes to get appetizers, and another 30 minutes to get our entrees. Drink orders, expect to wait 10-15 minutes for someone to pour you a shot. Waiter arguing with me telling me that my clear white tequila is a reposado and then bringing me a reposado shot shaken in ice, to gaslight me into thinking that a reposado tequila is whiter than it really is? I guess I’m blind AND stupid because I can’t tell the difference between white and gold liquids. And honestly when a waiter argues with a seasoned alcoholic about the colors of a liquor you know they’re green, just bring me another shot of the right stuff and I’ll pay for the incorrect one. I’m not trying to get something for free and even if I was and if 2oz of liquor is going to break the restaurant’s bank then you need to start looking for a new job, not argue with me.
Bartenders and waiters just chatted instead of servicing tables. If you’re going to make us wait that long for the food then at least keep the drinks flowing. Are they even trying to make money?
This is a restaurant with bad management leading to poorly trained staff. At the very least if your food is bad, provide good service.
Fish in the fish tacos were burnt and they deep fry the tortillas which I can only assume is to cover up the quality of the food it’s holding. Rice and beans were bland. It would’ve taken a marginal amount of salt for a significant improvement. Are the cooks tasting the stuff coming off the line? The only saving grace is that it looks nice and they make those gimmicky margarita slurpees in all colors of the rainbow.
We left confused and disappointed. Save your money and more importantly your time. Go...
Read moreWe visited Agave on Coastal Highway Rehoboth on January 3rd. It was our second visit to an Agave location. Our first visit to Agave was to their Lewes location four years ago. At that time, I was disappointed to learn that you could not order fajitas unless ordering for two. We were also told of their seating time limit of 90 minutes. I wanted to try the fajitas. I wound up ordering quesadillas. Years later, I stopped in the Lewes location and asked about the fajitas for two only policy. I was told that was no longer the case. I didn't ask the price charged if ordering for one. I should have. $$$61.
We decided to try the Agave location on Coastal Highway. There is a list of things I found off about the experience.
There were 3 in our party. There were 3 seats at the table. I asked for a 4th chair for our umbrella, purse, and two cane's. Every other table had four or more. We were seated near the door; coats stayed on. I asked - the guy came back and said none were available. There were - I asked again and was told it's up to the server. Really! I put the umbrella on the floor because it kept sliding when leaned on the table.
The server was rushed. From the minute we arrived to the moment he walked away after we paid; our server seemed more interested in clearing the bar seating section than looking after his guests. With a tab, including a tip of $129, I don't expect my car to get washed. I do expect to get the sense that our server wanted our business; I don't think he cared.
Chips and salsa are best before the meal. We would have enjoyed having more chips. Our server eventually offered them. More chips did come out with our entrees. I ate one for desert.
The food did not rise to the level of average. The fajitas were cold and served on a cold plate. The salsa, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream were served in a stainless jigger glass. Every order of fajitas I have ever had was better than Agave's. No sizzle at all. At $61, my expectations were not met.
We had water only. No cocktails, soda, or tea. The drink menu was never picked up. I usually order iced tea, my partner a cocktail 🍸. Perhaps service would have been better if we ordered from the drink menu.
The 20% tip did not reflect the service or quality.
I was generally...
