UPDATE 6/15 Have to take off a star, because the food I had this round was significantly different than their soft opening.
While I still like their house made longaniza and chicken, I wouldn't put this place on my list of favourite taquerias anymore.
Everything was oddly overcooked and dried out. The corn tortillas for my tacos and the flour tortillas for my choriqueso were crisped up and dried out too much. I'm assuming the dryness was due to overcooking and not age. The choriqueso at least ended up resembling a quesadilla, but the tacos were too chewy. The flavour was there, but it wasn't enough to save it.
The Al Pastor is very sweet and automatically comes with pineapple, if that's up your alley. I would've preferred a little more char, but to each their own.
For those thinking the choriqueso will be in a bowl with tortillas on the side (like the menu picture), they're actually choriqueso tacos. I was a bit excited to have that stringy cheese, but the tacos are more meat than cheese. Just an issue of expectation vs. reality really. They're still tasty. They do add lettuce, sour cream, pico, and salsas on the side though, which was appreciated.
I'm aware that they're still brand new and probably working out inconsistencies, so I'm hopeful and willing to try again! This place is still slowly making their way to an official opening (May 19?), but I was able to try a few tacos while they were having a soft opening.
If you're coming by car, parking here might be difficult. I didn't see any obvious parking, but I also didn't look too hard. The parking lot right next to the entrance had big signs stating the spots belonged to Second Hand Sports next door, so those are off limits. The business is also facing McKinney street and stuck between two establishments, so there isn't any street parking either. Your best bet is the open parking lot a little walk over infront of Oak Street Drafthouse.
If you happen to be at the square or one of the surrounding bars, this place is an easy walk.
We ordered our tacos from a counter outside. Most of their seating is outdoors, but they had a small area inside too. If you're with a group, expect to be outside for your meal.
The tacos are loaded with meat and come with a side of cucumber.
The corn tortillas used are some of the best I've had in comparison to other taquerias around here.
The chicken is by far the best I've had in Denton. Most local taquerias just have OKAY chicken, but these didn't even need salsa.
The campechanos is better than the other handful of times I've had it. It's an interesting combo of fajita beef and chorizo that I haven't really seen anywhere else in Denton. I overheard the owner (I believe) state that they make their own chorizo in shop, and that it's made with beef. It had a great taste and wasn't...
Read moreHorrible experience at this place today... Went in and ordered two #2's and was charged $23.50. The food took over 25 minutes to come out and by the time it did, everything was cold. The meat was hard, like it had been sitting out for a long time. The rice was also hard, the beans were okay, but like I said it was cold. As we were leaving we realized we had been charged way more than the #2 lunch special was, which was supposed to be $6.99 for the plate plus a canned drink. My wife went to ask why we were charged wrong and the lady said because we were supposed to ask for the lunch special and her boss told her to charge full price if you don't specifically ask for the "lunch special." The sign outside clearly states the #2 during the lunch hours are $6.99. No where did it say you must ask for this special (see attached picture) When I brought the sign to the lady at the front she came up to me like she was going to attack me and said I was being rude and aggressive, even though I had been nice about it the whole time, just wanted to not be overcharged. The lady cooking the food even told her just to try to make it right, but this lady was just extremely rude about the...
Read moreTried this place out for the first time last night, and I have to say, the food here was SO GOOD that I came back again in less than 24 hours! I honestly wish that I had heard of this place sooner. Not only is their food delicious and freshly cooked to order, but also the atmosphere is great! They have both indoor and outdoor ordering and seating options. The service is top tier, and the employees are very kind. They are patient as well which was helpful. The restaurant is cleaned and carefully looked after. The turn around time from ordering and getting your food is not long at all! Also, the portions are huge! Great people and delicious food at very reasonable prices as well. I'm definitely going to be back pretty often because Ambro's Tacos y Más is now officially one of my favorite restaurants. And my go to spot for tasty...
