Previous owner Matt was an incredible barista. Kind, thoughtful and made an incredible cup of coffee. I enjoy quizzing my baristas, so naturally I threw him into the grinder. Cortados (in the original 5oz cup!), flat whites, drip, lattes, matcha lattes, pour-over, cold-brew. It wasn't perfect every time, but the passion and love for coffee was obvious. So I loved supporting the business. It was walking distance, provided fantastic conversation, and possessed the magical feeling of community we have all been starved for since Covid.
Now, it is yet another example of trying to cash into the gentrification of Denver. Prices have gone up (understandable), yet quality has gone down. As others have stated, there seems to be no cultivation of community. The vibe in the coffee shop is now bland, the new owner lacks enthusiasm and pleasantries. Preferring to sit at the counter (unless of course a pretty customer comes in), I no longer see a bright future. And that is upsetting.
I'm sure we will see clothing and other attempts to appeal to the new young families on Tennyson. Perhaps donuts or other sweets, more superficial attempts at drawing people in. At the end of the day, none of this would bother me if they had a decent breakfast sandwich. If every espresso shot was delicious. If when I walked in, they had new offerings or an improved space. If the atmosphere was provocative and thrilling, instead of dreary. If they had the best since they make you pay as if its the best.
Now, sadly, I would rather see a Starbucks. Words I never thought I would utter with 8 years in the service industry and 3 as a barista. I love local business but this has the feel of detached fantasy. A lamentable attempt rather than an alluring passion.
TLDR: The light has dimmed on a once great...
Read moreI have food allergies and after repeatedly asking for oat milk, I watched the batista put whole milk in my coffee. Through our whole interaction he treated me like a nuisance and was clearly not paying attention. Despite trying to clarify several times that I needed alternative milk, I was ignored. By the time I got my drink it wasn't worth the effort to try to correct the order when the batista clearly didn't care and I ended up having to throw out the coffee. I was disappointed because the coffee here looks amazing. I work in the restaurant industry and this is not only poor service, but potentially harmful to people with food...
Read moreFirst time coming here and I was very impressed. Karl is a top notch barista who is the equivalent of a coffeehouse sommelier. He really puts his heart into each drink he makes. My friend’s latte had a mild, non-acidic, well balanced smoothness quality to it. I went for an iced green tea, which Karl brewed on the spot. It was so aromatic and fresh, I could have almost gone for a second glass. The Pandemic Donuts (a Curtis Park favorite) were quite scrumptious. The atmosphere at Devil’s Cup is both relaxing and charming. Warm, natural light, a classy exposed brick motif and plenty of comfy seating. We’ll be...
