Really cool place that is a restaurant in a big house. Very unique atmosphere. The breakfast mac and cheese is solid, and typically my go to if I don't get the poutine or a po' boy. The four stars are because the vibe is a little too quiet and polite for me, and they could have better brunch drink specials, but you should check it out for very good New Orleans food. If the system allowed me to do 4.5 stars, I would have given it that. Let's call it "4 plus."
Adding to review since we went there this weekend. My trips here basically revolve around me TRYING not to get the breakfast mac and cheese. Tough battle. So, you know THAT is good. But, we went there the other morning, and I had the Southern Sunrise (add Pimento), and I already can tell you the poutine is off the chart. I am not a biscuit guy, but if you are, get the Chicken Pimento Biscuit. Fire. The grits are awesome. The red habanero hot sauce is awesome, service is usually on point, the hostess is always welcoming, the place is like a house, and always ask for bar seats if they say they are full. If not having drinks, know that their Sun Tea is great, and if having drinks, the Bloody Mary is pretty stellar. In the end though, just get the breakfast mac and cheese. Oh, and ALWAYS add Pimento cheese to anything.
NEXT VISIT AND CHANGED RATING TO A FIVE: Brunch review again. BUT, bar experience. My wife always hedged on this place, and didn't even know they had a bar, so know that they do and it is fun. Less polite and louder. Otherwise, it is a nostalgic place with great New Orleans food.
They have an IPA for $6. Score. Actually, they have multiple beers for $6, so that is a plus. Phyllis and Kat are the bomb. Phyllis handles the coffee drinks, Kat handles the peeps. I got the poutine and the roast beef was amazing. They have housemade hot sauce on the bar or table so that is covered. I was not impressed with my first poutine months ago, but they have added PIMENTO, so now it is awesome (including pics of both). Wife had the wedge salad and it was solid, but I don't eat salads on weekends or Fridays. Be aware that you won't be able to watch sports here, but you won't care. I have had the breakfast mac and it is incredible, and the breakfast Po Boys aren't slouches.
Now that we have sat at the back bar, my wife is sold. That means I hope that you go, but don't take our bar seats. Definitely recommend and see you there (but not at the bar).
You won't get this joke, but I hope the drunk guy at the bar whose birthday was on December 25th figured out the comeback to the girl ordering a French 75. He was very angry. Thougt it was allof, and not realizing Denver has a whole cool bar named on that drink. My vote was the Double Dutch 11. Or the Non-Neutral Swiss. Or the Creed Crete. Or the Porch-ugal Pirate. I could on and on.
But, at the end of the day, you should go there for the excellent service of Kat and Phyllis. Definitely recommend and...
Read moreThe breakfast I just had was so good I needed to get online and give my flowers. I had the Bacon Hash & Chicken Fried Eggs and it was not at all what I was expecting.
It's the best parts of a Scottish egg deconstructed and amplified. Bison hash had fun surprises in each bite and well seasoned throughout. I was laughing to myself at this dish the entire time I was eating it because it was so clever and delicious. Here are some of the finer details:
Let's start with the undercard. If you moved to Denver and lived here for long enough, your expectations for good, freshly baked bread are as low as mine. And honestly, I don't know what makes a good corn bread. My experience with cornbread is that like Italian's like their pasta, grandma's version is best. In all, this cornbread was fine, but take a bigger fan's word for it. Okay, on to the good stuff.
The eggs. These eggs end as well as they tease. Start by smelling the aromatics of the thin, crisp batter and wonder where the egg is going; then, cut into the egg and watch the perfectly cooked egg ooze onto your plate and expand your curiosity; and finally, bite into the delicately built textures of crisp on top of soft on top of liquid. Your favorite jelly filled crème brûlée donut wishes it could be this egg. Oh, and don't you dare forget to dab it in the hollandaise, which was the start of the show.
The balance of this hollandaise was excellent. The point of going through the trouble of making this sauce for your eggs is because what you get by emulsifying something acidic, egg yolk and butter obtains a flavor and texture you can't get by throwing a stick of butter into fluffy scrambled eggs. Everyone can do the latter at home, but not just anyone can nail a well balanced hollandaise. If I were actively looking to be a hater, I'd say it could have been a touch more acidic and I didn't catch any cayenne, but people's taste is sensitive to adding too much of those, and I didn't feel the need for more of either.
So in all, I'll be back to see what else Sassafras has got, and I'll take my sweet time for as long as this super friendly staff will have me. Actually, that's making me regret writing all of this...on second thought,...
