This review is of the Derby, CT location for all the celiacs out there who need gluten free/allergy safety protocols.
I went around 1:30PM on Sunday, Nov 24, 2024.
As a chain, I experience Jersey Mike's to be be a little hit or miss in terms of precautions. Today I stopped at the one in Derby for the first time and really appreciated how thoroughly and attentively the staff person helping me followed the safety protocol and even politely called out/redirected other staff who were making a to-go order and started doing things that could expose my food to gluten.
Obviously it may not have gone as well had one of those other less attentive staff members helped me, but this woman seemed like she might have been in a leadership role, so I feel confident going back.
I made sure to be the last in line and not to go during a rush, but I was impressed at the time she took to get it right. Even my teen took notice and said, "I can see why you come here, mom."
As a vegetarian who loads my subs with veggies, the riskiest thing about Jersey Mike's for me is that most of the stores keep most of their veggies in a shared prep area where people put veggies on gluten-filled as well as gluten-free sandwiches. This is the case in the Derby shop too, but I noticed that the staff person helping me specifically did not pull my veggies from the top, but chose to go in more untouched areas of the bins and under the top layer. I really, really appreciated that.
Jersey Mike's uses Udi's sub rolls for gluten free subs. I am holding out hope that a better gluten free sub roll eventually will be available. The Udi's rolls can be on the dry side (I just use more sauces to counterbalance it), but subs are one of the things I miss most from before having celiac, so it hits the spot. Plus I love having a "fast food" I can actually eat, and it is both tasty and a healthier fast food option. I find myself going to Jersey Mike's more and more. It is pricier than I might like, I am guessing because the Udi's is not cheap, but as we celiacs know, it is worth it to have things we...
Read moreMy girlfriend I order Jersey Mikes very often always 2 regular sized cold subs and yea it’s over priced for sandwiches but I’m writing this review because one of the workers a guy probably in his late 20’s tattoos longer unkept dark brown or blackish hair, is very unhygienic, seen him touch subs and the register and cash with out changing his gloves not once , and there were many subs being made before mine and he touched his face with the same gloves too , I was grossed out , I come here often so I always pray he isn’t working while I’m there , but I’m too uncomfortable to say something to him or the staff especially when he is touching his nose or face with the same gloves and it’s every time he is there he is gross , I’m not trying to be mean but he looks sloppy and dirty too, iv also seen him not do his job too which i would say I’d rather him have nothing to do with making or touching my food but when he is not actually doing his job he is being a creep to the underage co worker girls jeez man he is like almost 30 or already in his 30’s but he needs a shower , proper food safety education, and a sexual harassment prevention program. Like I said earlier he is white longer dark hair, a sad excuse for barley facial hair, tattoos he has a night mare before Christmas tattoo for sure, and in his late 20’s to early 30’s. And about 5’11 or so. Just saying watch out if you’re worried about cross contamination and maybe a bed bug jumping from him to...
Read moreCompletely DISGUSTING!! I went into this shop this evening about 8:30 pm. I asked for a roast beef and cheese and as I watched this young man making my sandwich I noticed he was slicing left over end cuts. I watched as he labored over taking this extremely small piece of meat and tried to slice it needless to say it was pure fat and he was able to get 3 small slices out of this old and disgusting end piece. He reached in the case and pulled out another very small end piece and started slicing that up too. Again he was able to get 2-3 slices of complete fat and burnt fibers and placed that on the bread and walked away I guess to get another end piece of meat I stopped him and at this point questioned why he would be slicing up a piece of meat that was men’t to be discarded!!! I told him the sandwich looked like s%#T (were my exact words) and completely gross and as I walked out I saw the female working there take a look at the sandwich and did NOTHING to try and rectify the situation with me. I was so disgusted I simply just walked out. This was a completely HORRIFIC experience and I am a person who loves to go to Jersey Mikes often. I think I’ll just go back to Subway. At least their consistent and they don’t try and make sandwiches with meats that were men’t to be discarded!! And by the way, I know it was close to the end of the night but that’s no excuse for the place to be filthy as well.
Gross and Disgusting performance...
