This review is specifically for those considering Dose as a spot to study or get work done
As a student and avid coffee shop studier, I was really looking forward to trying out Dose Detroit to study, grab a bite, and enjoy a coffee, but unfortunately, the experience was unbearable due to the extreme noise level. The music was blasting so loudly that I could still hear it over my noise-canceling AirPods at full volume. Even the group next to me was complaining that they couldn’t concentrate or even hear each other speak across the table. To make matters worse, the sound system itself wasn’t great, making the loud music even more grating.
I offered to ask the barista if they could turn it down just a little, but I was met with a dismissive response about how they "curate a vibe" on weekends by playing house music at an overwhelming volume. As someone who actually enjoys house music, I get that they’re going for a certain atmosphere on weekends—but this wasn’t about the music choice; it was about the sheer volume. Despite explaining this, they refused to lower the music, though they were willing to adjust the window shades since the sun was shining in (not sure how dimming the space doesn’t ruin the "vibe," but adjusting the sound slightly does?). The large group studying next to me left soon after, and I followed suit.
If you’re looking for a study spot (or somewhere to even have a conversation), I highly recommend going elsewhere. I can’t even comment on the food because I had to leave before I could order. Really disappointing, as I was planning to settle in for a while. The only reason I am giving two stars instead of one is because the coffee was decent and the bald man working (maybe one of the owners?) seemed very attentive...
Read moreI’m typically not one to leave poor business reviews, but I felt it was necessary for this one. I ordered an iced matcha and a chicken salad sandwich. I sipped my gritty matcha while watching other people get their food before me. I figured they were just busy and 45 minutes went by before I went to inquire about my sandwich. Finally I got my sandwich and it was so full of mayo it kept sliding around in my hands. Unimpressed for $16 spent on a sandwich, and nearly $30 all together with a tip.
The atmosphere is tawdry and full of cheap looking decor. Art prints on the walls that look like Amazon knockoffs, tacky mini disco balls hanging, and an amalgamation of mismatched furniture. It seems like a generic interpretation of a successful coffee/plant shop in a much larger city. Perhaps I’m just tired of falling for the traps of attractive photos on social media, but this was just not it. Also, perhaps I’m tired of places that are known for their overpriced avocado toast, it’s not...
Read moreI can not talk about this place enough. The coffee alone is the best pour in the city! Plus plants and coffee, got me in the door anyway. But I stay a while for the vibe. The food, is A1, and the menu switches out, and exposes you to new bites over time. You won't be disappointed. TRY EVERYTHING! My fav to date is the polish soup, chefs kiss!
It reminds me of a upscale/quality yet approachable café that I would read about in a international travel mag or a novel. The space is open, airy, clean and with all the plants, (I love plants) there are no buggies/gnats flying around.
Dose is PERFECT!
Alan and Adam are both great people and I am so happy they are here! They are always pleasant, and accommodating, and I know that can be tough, opening a new business and transitioning but they both wear it well.
If you haven't visited yet, what on earth are you waiting for!? Run...
