I don't get it! Went once, wasn't impressed in the least & NOTHING I had or saw enticed me to want to return.
I guess if ur not a good cook, wasn't reared with good/great soulfood cooks in the family and/or grew up on restaurant food, u would be impressed. I WASN'T!!! I am 110% positive that on my worst cooking day, (there may have been 3 in 50+ years), I can rate HIGH above EVERY dish they serve. Maybe the portion sizes are compensation for the slightly below average rating I personally give. By the way, my portion was average, not enough to carry out or like another review stated, "too much to eat in one sitting & got sick trying". I wouldn't have taken it anyway. I went early enough that they shouldn't have run out of items and I prefer my food hot not room temperature or cold.
Anyone remember that other soulfood restaurant that used to be near downtown Detroit, off Larned I think on a side street. It was a small loft like setting, didn't seat many and was always crowded? They finally moved to a larger location & I visited it my last time in the D, but I cant remember the name of the restaurant or the new street name. NOW THATS SOME DELICIOUS HOT WELL SEASONED SOULFOOD!! Their dressing, THANK YOU JESUS, "ONLY" dressing I have ever had that I crave and don't mind spending money for vs cooking my own; & ALL the family chooses me to make the dressing!!! I always went with enough ppl to ensure each main course was ordered so I could get a taste of everything because it was so hard deciding what to order. Maybe our lazy society & generation of children raising themselves/fast food generation, are the ones that find Steve's so SUPERB - I JUST DONT SEE (OR TASTE) IT (what the raving reviews see/taste). If it ain't broke don't fix it I guess Steve....I read a few complaints but they state they are repeat customers so it's not too bad or they prefer donating to ur success versus investing time & effort in cooking/learning to cook they're own. In today's world/society, I elect to cook my own food & even with that, you better pray & pray again over what u bring home from the...
Read moreAs stated in another review, I was told about this restaurant by the rental car shuttle bus driver at DTW.
She was not wrong.
My wife and stopped by here on a cool, cloudy evening after visiting the Ford Museum. We were both very hungry. After having our GPS take us to this location we parked on the street and went inside. Our first impression involved the building itself, which was very beautiful and was built in the Art Deco manner. We found out later that the building itself was over 100 years old. Very impressive.
At this restaurant, the food is served up cafeteria style. You walk the line and a helpful employee tells you what is available on the line and describes dishes if you are not familiar with them. After listening to the menu choices I had BBQ chicken, collard greens and pinto beans. My wife had the rib tips, cabbage and corn. To be honest, I have never had that much food in a restaurant. And, to say that this was soul food would be a gross understatement. This was the absolute best soul food I've ever had. And, as I told Steve the owner, who happened to be there, those collard greens were second only to those of my Mother (rest her soul). That is the highest compliment I can give to any cook. The food was that good. The chicken was falling off the bone and was an entire half chicken. The beans were done just right and were also delicious. My wife ate just about everything on here plate too. We were both happy, to say the least. And despite all this food, we also had desert. I had the sweet potato pie and my wife had peach cobbler. Needless to say, we had to take the deserts back to our hotel for enjoyment at a later time. We were too stuffed to eat them.
If you ever happen to be in Detroit you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not eat here.
The building is beautiful, the decor attractive, the staff is awesome and the food is the best soul food I have ever had.
I would dine here again in a New York minute.
Thanks to Steve and his entire staff.
Your restaurant made our visit to Detroit...
Read moreWe made a 3:00 Saturday reservation on their web page. We arrived at 2:45 to check in. The sign on the building was correct but you must enter through the main front door (...you mean the one with shattered glass from a bullet hole?), which has another business name on the door. The lobby was empty and there was no signage to tell you to take the elevator to the 3rd floor. Blaring music was coming from upstairs.
Once some exiting people from the elevator told us where to go, we told the hostess we had a 3:00 reservation. She said "We close in 10 minutes, so come back tomorrow." NO APOLOGY, no empathy and definitely treated us as if the party they were about to have was more important. She then ignored us, pushed the elevator button, and returned to singing/chair-dancing Sexy Redd's song they were playing.
First impressions are important--not the taste of the food. Since you mishandled the out of town customers who determine if you even get our $60-70, we took our business elsewhere. Did we/will we go back? When pigs fly!! GOOD customer service and KINDNESS go a long way to making or breaking your business. In hindsight, before we left our hotel, we asked the concierge about Steve's Soul Food restaurant. She hesitated and told us "They've gone down alot. You should go somewhere else." Damn... we should...
