Heard about this place from a Facebook group I am in so we decided to try it out for a Sunday dinner. I think it would be nice if they did a brunch or opened a bit earlier than 5pm on Sundays. You're definitely going to want to get there at 5pm on the dot because this place is small and fills up rather fast.
We were seated immediately which was nice. Our server was very pleasant, but it was obvious she was likely new to serving as there were a few rookie mistakes she made (bringing toddlers an adult sized water in a glass cup, not knowing the menu well (bar or food), dropping steak knives, giving my father in law a club cocktail glass to use to pour his bottled beer in, us having to request things several times, messing up orders despite taking them at the table with a mobile kiosk and repeating them back, not knowing what is 86'd in the kitchen and not relaying that until the food came and it wasn't on the plate, etc.), but she did try to correct them. I empathize, I myself was a server in college and this establishment just opened for business, but I definitely think a training program should be implemented.
FOOD: For the most part, 90% of our food was delicious. We ordered an order of the honey glazed salmon, the fried chicken dinner with sweet potatoes and broccoli, the surf and surf (one grilled and one friend lobster tail served with asparagus and whipped potatoes), the ribeye steak, and an order of children's chicken tenders with fries. The chicken was well seasoned down to the crust, the potatoes were great, the lobster tails were meaty, and my father in law, a man of few words, said at least twice during his meal how delicious the salmon was. While the ribeye was flavored well it was a gristly cut of meat at the price point of $45, that is really not acceptable. The broccoli was simply steamed with no seasoning.
DRINKS: My husband ordered The Southern Gentleman, which is their version of an old fashioned. He is an old fashioned aficionado so he was disappointed when it was served in a club/bar drink cup instead of a low ball whiskey glass with no maraschino cherry and was very sweet almost as if orange juice had been poured into it. This is another area where more staff training is needed. There is a difference between club drinks and restaurant drinks.
DESSERT: We had banana pudding and peach cobbler. Both were good, but the plating/presentation was sloppy. Maybe offer these in bowls or use a scooper or mold for them instead of presenting them slapped runny on a plate?
AMBIANCE: The place is clean with an industrial warehouse or bar-like feel. It's comprised mostly of wooden booths (sans cushions) and a few tables. While they do take liberty to put a flower vase on each table and installed a few small chandeliers over each table, it is a very casual environment and the price point of items on the menu don't reflect that it is casual dining. For instance, I would prefer them to downgrade certain menu items...maybe offer hanger steak and frites instead of a $45 ribeye if the cut of meat is going to be gristly and it's not served in a fine dining enviornment (i.e. no table clothes, children allowed, etc.) and stick to very traditional cocktails. They also do not have any beers on draft and have a limited selection of beer (I believe there are 2 options?).
SUMMARY: There's a few kinks they are going to need to figure out as they just opened, but the food is good. More staff training is needed for servers and bartenders. The prices of some of the dishes don't match the ambiance (prices higher than the ambiance dictates). Tons of potential here. I...
Read moreThe restaurant is clean and could be a great vibe. Unfortunately, the staff outside of Marissa and a young lady who I assumes to be a manager was extremely nonchalant. The waitresses came off as if they were angry and extremely unhappy to be there. They escorted us to the patio, which was pleasant looking but we had to ask more than once for them to clean the pollen off the table. Asking twice wasn’t the issue for us, the real issue was the waitress that came while we were waiting for the other waitress to come and wipe the table. She proceeded to sit our plates and silverware on a dirty table! So, we politely with two other tables decided to walk ourselves back inside. Our waitress checked on us once or twice. Marissa, who was not our waitress checked on us a few times, refilled our drinks and placed an add on to our order! She definitely saved the day and is one of the reasons why they have three stars. The music that was playing wasn’t too loud and it wasn’t too low but unfortunately I don’t know if the waitresses were just ignoring us or the music was too loud for them to hear! Again this is an exception to Marissa because she was on it!! OK ….let’s talk about why they have three stars!!!! We ordered the impossible hamburgers which was delicious. We were impressed with the restaurant decor and again the ability to be a great vibe. Also, we were impressed with the atmosphere of the black own business…. I’m not sure exactly what happened with the macaroni and cheese but it was bland and dry….. which was shocking because it looks so delicious and they have it as one of their signature dishes. But it’s serves in a small palm size dish for eight dollars…. Also, the menu options look delicious but by the taste of the macaroni it made me a little doubtful on how the other dishes would taste!!! I can say I am willing to give them a second chance. So, we will be back and will update y’all again….Red Velvet Bistro, please just have a talk with the employees…..ask them to smile more, ask them to greet more, and to check on their customers more! One more little complaint for this three star review. The other thing our waitress did was ask us if we wanted to go boxes just a few minutes after receiving our food. Our plates were still full so clearly we wasn’t done eating….Here’s to hopefully we can give y’all 5 stars next time!! Sorry for the blurry pics. The light on the side on the table isn’t needed….I couldn’t get a...
Read moreI had a reservation for eight people . When I arrived at the restaurant the reservation was changed to an hour later , the owner told me I could sit and when half my party arrived, we could then be served. She said I couldn’t order anything ,not even a glass of water. I found this to be very strange, but I complied, since my reservation was changed by them from 5 to 6 PM ,,, so at 6:10 when 5 of my other guest still hadn’t arrived, because there was a bad accident on I 20, and they were actually five minutes away ,the owner then expressed that if they weren’t there in 10 minutes, I would have to vacate the table. Very disturbing, but at the age of 63 I have learned to not let anyone steal my joy, especially when I’m spending my $$! While I was waiting for my guests to arrive the waitress, who was phenomenal, said “I’m going to serve you Miss, what would you like to order?” Amazing,,,, the professionalism and common sense from this young lady to know that while we are sitting there, we should be spending $$$$. She was tipped extra… Once the remaining guests arrived. We had a blast . We spent a lot of money at this establishment!!! . I would’ve actually spent more , because it was a birthday celebration, but I opted out of getting a bottle of champagne , slices of cake, because of the unprofessionalism I received from the owner. I WILL patronize ,RED VELVET BRISTO, my local restaurant again ,because I believe in supporting ,not only my own, but ALL people. I hope that whatever bad day the owner was having, that in the future she could not bring it to any table , at any of her restaurants. I will say , the food was phenomenal. Bravo to the Chef and his staff. The drinks were wonderfully prepared , and her staff is amazing!!! if it wasn’t for the young lady that was our server, we would have ceased ordering any more food, paid our bill, and walked out. Hopefully ,maybe one day , that waitress will open her own establishment ,and I can patronize and support her also. I wish this restaurant nothing but the best and hopefully going forward. I can experience a better experience, so I’ll be able to post a totally POSITIVE & phenomenal...
