I used to be a server for Sonny’s at a different location last year. I just ate here today and this is my sincere feedback:
The table I was sat at was not thoroughly cleaned or organized. 1 barbecue bottle was sitting in the middle of the table. Crumbs on the table. Cleanliness is my first impression and I feel it’s so simple to clean and prep tables/booths properly. It’s discouraging to me and reflects overall conduct of employees and management. Overall cleanliness of the restaurant, 7/10. Other tables unclean, chairs out of order, little garbage here and there. Wasn’t horrible. I just expected better since it’s not too busy, so there is enough down time to keep everything looking clean and sharp... I can brush this off somewhat because I understand being caught up and back up on things sometimes. But a host on her phone, and employees walking around with shoe lace untied and baggy pants, was not a pleasant sight.
I had one of my favorite dishes: the Smoked Turkey Plate with Mac, Baked Beans & Garlic Bread. The food was overall good and how I remembered, but it just missed the touch in making me want to come back any more on a few things. The biggest bummer was that when I worked last year, Sonny’s would give extra bread for free. At this location I was charged for an extra piece of bread. I’m unsure if that’s changed permanently for all locations but that’s a huge bummer. The turkey was cold. I appreciate when it comes hot. Beans and Mac were fresh, I appreciate that but I do recall when I worked for Sonny’s, being forced to serve not so fresh beans and Mac just to avoid food waste, at the cost of the guests experience. I feel like Sonny’s has so much potential but overall this experience failed me and I feel discouraged to want to return but overall it’s about what I expected..
I appreciate the smoking process their meats go thru, and I will be tempted to return for the delicious baby back ribs, but I’m discouraged with the direction that their inconsistent service and environment offers. I will explore elsewhere at other barbecue spots.
Improve your consistency in service, better staffing, and cleanliness, and bring back all you can eat bread haha my sincere feedback. The server was solid by the way but I’m bad with names and forgot. He was kind and informal. And I saw positive engagements with servers and other guests.
