I ordered a cake for my mother's birthday and had emailed them specifics that included a photo showing them what I wanted. I requested an off white buttercream, vanilla cake with raspberry filling, and writing in gold. I wrote in my email I wanted something elegant and classy for my mom. They emailed me back telling me they could make this cake no problem. With this review I have the photo I emailed them (my expectation), and a photo of what I got. When the day came to pick up the cake I went in and was given what looks like a baby shower cake. White buttercream, pink writing, cartoon roses: not what I ordered. I told the lady it wasn't what I ordered, and she apologized and offered to put more roses on it. She also told me they don't have metallic gold for writing, but an orange they could rewrite with. Other than several apologies, nothing was done to make this situation right and I ended up paying $65 for a cake that I could get from a box store. Even Walmart decorates their cakes better than this. Don't tell customers you can make something for them if you can't. 1 star for cake decorating and 2 stars for the flavor. When looking for bakeries in Duluth for our wedding, we wanted to make sure we would order local. Johnson’s bakery came to mind first. We wanted to do something special for our dessert table so we ordered 300 mini cinnamon rolls, and a 6 inch carrot cake for our cake cutting. Johnson’s bakery was very easy to work with. We were able to pay for everything the day before so it would be easier for pick up the next day. Everything turned out great and tasted amazing! We had so many compliments on the cinnamon rolls, and we made sure to send home extras with our guests. The carrot cake was so delicious too! Honestly it's a really iconic original local business and I have nothing but love for this place. Really. I also love super close so it's right around the corner. In fact it is the closest business to my house that offers food. That is really remarkable. But aside from that, they make a lot of pastries here, and I love them a lot. They do custom orders if you call ahead of time it's really the best thing to do because the stuff they have in the windows is just not that impressive. I would go so far as to say I am displeased with their selection of display items. Sorry, johnsons bakery, I am sad that I said that... but I can't make the sun shine...
