I have been to Barbacoa a handful of times so it was nice to come to it's sister restaurant tonight. Walking into the turquoise colored doors, I thought this venue would have a similar esthetic as Barbacoa. Boy was I wrong! What a beautiful venue. It's light, airy and nautical. I loved all the light colored tones everywhere. There's something pretty to look at at every corner. From the seating to the lights, it just sets such a romantic tone.
We were sat at a huge round table. The lazy Susan was nice. It helped us be able to get our appetizers and pass out our drinks with ease.
For appetizers we started with table side guac, spicy calamari and clams with chorizo. The calamari was delicious! It was perfectly fried on the outside with a great texture of the squid on the inside. It was perfectly coated with a sweet spicy glaze. The clams were good! It came with a beautiful piece of bread to help soak up the broth. The table side guac was so fresh! You can taste the lime and tomatoes in it. You can't go wrong with the guacamole.
Before dinner we got a couple salads. The "break it yourself" Cesar salad and the wedge salad. The wedge salad had a great amount of bacon and blue cheese crumbles! Each bite is the salad was differnt and delicious! The Cesar was plated inside a bowl made of cheese. I would recommend sharing this salad with a couple people. It was heavenly dressed with parmesan! The salad was crisp and so fresh. You can eat and eat the salad and never finish. The best part of this salad was breaking the cheese bowl into bite size pieces into the salad. A cheesy crouton with every bite.
For dinner I got the grilled seafood plate. It was stunningly plated. The seafood on the plate had fabulous char marks on it. Scallops, shrimp and lobster served over brocollini and potatoes. The shrimp was massive! I did find a part of the shrimp undercooked so I did reheat it on my husband's hot rock. The scallop was thick and fresh! The lobster tail was nicely cooked. I dipped that baby into the butter and it was perfection. The brocollini was not bitter and tender. It was a fabulous meal.
We ended our fabulous meal with the creme brulee. This dessert is a must have! The fresh berries on top elevated the coconut flavoring of the dessert. It honestly looked too pretty to eat. It was delicately garnished with an orchid.
Tonight would have been a 5 star visit for me but the service failed. Our server took large amounts of time to get to us. Appetizers and drinks started the experience off nicely but it went downhill from there. We sat around after appetizers were done. My husband had to flag her down to order salads. And we had to ask her to take dinner orders cause we were tired of waiting. Drinks were forgotten. Wrong salad was ordered. Dinner was finished, dessert was ordered, dropped off and that was the last time we saw her. Our dinner got paid for and she was gone. So, service for me was just ok.
Another thing that bothered me was the fact that they don't have any coat racks, coat check or any other option for our winter jackets. We were sat at a round table so putting our jackets on the back of our chairs wasn't an option. We tried stacking them on the side of the booth but over time the weight of the jackets slid and fell. It's kinda sad that we were in this this beautiful venue with expensive plates and we had to leave our jackets on the ground. But what other options did we have? If you're going to seat guests at a booth with no options to hang their jackets, then a coat check service should be an option. Or don't have 9 people with 9 jackets at a round table.
I do look forward coming back and having late happy hour there. It's such a stunning restaurant to have a romantic date night at. And you can't go wrong supporting local businesses here...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a restaurant worth revisiting for sure. This was my first visit and Iām giving it 4 stars, but based on my experiences at its sister restaurants Barbacoa and Coa de Jima, Iāll be prepared to update my review if things go well in subsequent visits.
The places is just as thoughtfully designed as their sister restaurants, yet does a good job of creating its own identity as a more seafood oriented offering. The thing that is most striking is the very open feel of the place as you walk in. Compared to Barbacoa intentionally dark, edgy atmosphere, CDM feels bright, welcoming, and a bit more refined. At Barb, the chandelier in the main dining room catches your eye, and so does the chandelier here at CDM. Likely by the same artist, but with a different take- It almost looks like a sea of jellyfish at CDM.
Somehow the patio and windows seem to provide a more panoramic view of the pond and homes and sky beyond, and almost felt like āocean frontā dining on this wintry day. We sat on the enclosed patio and were treated to nice views, including some blue sky (until it later started raining). The temperature was perfect even here, while at Barb sitting on the patio during the winter can be a bit on the chilly side.
The food was great when it all arrived, consistent with what weāve come to expect from the other restaurants. The steak tasted to be from the same farm, and with the presentation on the hot rock and flaming cognac sauce, you wouldnāt even know youāre not at Barb.
My wifeās seafood dish was a differentiator. The Hawaiian-flared Mahi Mahi and lobster tail atop sweet bananas and pineapple salsa was great.
Their wine-by-glass selection on this particular night was satisfactory, with common cabs like Justin available. I do wish they had a more elaborate reds by glass selection. Same wish for Barb, Iāll say. My wife doesnāt do Reds usually so unless I want to drink a whole bottle alone, Iām limited to the short list of by-glass options.
The Maui onion soup was pretty good. Serving temperature was probably about just right, if not a degree or two cooler than expected. No complaints. It was hot, but cool enough to eat immediately without burning my mouth.
Desserts are very similar to Barb, with some cool exceptions. Wife had the coconut Creme brĆ»lĆ©e. Weāve had this at Barb too, but here they served it with mini diced strawberry which paired amazingly. I went for the coffee and doughnuts, minus the doughnuts (I donāt like them at Barb), but to my surprise the coffee was not the espresso ice cubes + milk as it is at Barb. Instead, at CDM itās an affogato style espresso and was surprisingly delicious.
Minus 1 star on service because: I was told Iād get a separate soup spoon for my soup, but my soup came without one and I had to ask for one and wait for it to arrive When my steak arrived, I immediately noticed it was a filet mignon, not the ribeye I ordered. Someone less familiar with steaks may not have even noticed. Since they had to take it back and redo my order, my wife was well into her entree already by the time my food arrived. Normally for an incorrect entree resulting in this messed up rhythm with my wife, Iād drop it to 2 or 3 stars max. But our server comped our desserts, so I only dropped 1.
Overall, Iām guessing these issues were a fluke and weāll definitely be back. This place has much of what we love about Barbacoa, but is much...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLet me start off by saying the atmosphere and restaurant itself is absolutely stunning! I had high expectations of this place as being a frequent flier at Barbacoa and Coa de Jima. What an amazing restaurant group! When we heard they were opening a seafood spin we were ecstatic! And for it to be on the water in beautiful Eagle, ID, what more could anyone want. We tried Coa Del Mar for the first time tonight, and were sadly disappointed. We figured giving the restaurant roughly two months to work out the kinks and growing pains would suffice, but we ran into a few complications. I went through the menu with the waitress and was pleased to hear they could modify most items to be gluten free! We started with the Yellowtail Sashimi, which tasted fairly fishy for being āflown in fresh dailyā. It was also a much smaller portion than portrayed online, and had no garnish. We requested it to come gluten free, to which it did not as it came covered in sauce. When we questioned this the waitress initially denied hearing the request and encouraged us to purchase another to remedy the situation. She then came back around to correct herself and exchange this one, as well as assure the entree Iād like would be gluten free. An appreciated gesture. She was extremely attentive from here on out and there were no hard feelings. After waiting quite some time for our entrees, my dadās entree came first, which was the wrong item all-together, and came an easy 20 minutes before the rest of the meal. He even questioned the look of the dish to the waitress and she stated it was correct, even though it was not. Still waiting for the rest of the entrees, the manager came by to apologize for the delay as they had a āprinting errorā. My dad asked him what the item was, and he confirmed it wasnāt what he ordered, but blamed my dad for ordering the wrong item because the menu items āsound too similarā. At this point the dish had been sitting untouched for 20 minutes. He opted to comp the item and correct it on his expense. The corrected item ended up on the bill, but he ate it and enjoyed it, so all is fair. The rest of our food was good. Two seafood platters and a lobster Mac and cheese. Not blow your socks off, but good. All-in-all, I will absolutely try this restaurant again because I do believe they have it in them to work out the kinks. Maybe simplifying the menu would help as it is quite large. The restaurant group is phenomenal. I believe in them, and the ambiance at this particular location is absolutely stunning, probably one of the best, but the first impression was sadly underwhelming.
*another simple note for families, there are no family restrooms or accommodations to change...
