Under (VERY IMPRESSIVE) New Management It’s rare that I’m this happy to write a review.
I’ve recently rediscovered Wasabi House in East Brunswick, and I am completely blown away by the level of artistry, quality, and care that now goes into every dish. The experience feels elevated, refined, and—most impressively—genuine.
I started by browsing their menu and was stunned to find nigiri offerings that are nearly unheard of in the U.S. Selections like Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper), Shima Aji (Striped Jack), Hirame Shiso (Fluke with shiso), and Double Decker (Bluefin Toro topped with Hokkaido Uni) immediately caught my eye. I’ve been eating sushi for over 40 years, and I can say confidently: I’ve never seen a lineup like this at any sushi restaurant in the U.S. AND IT IS IN EAST BRUNSWICK! This is not your typical sushi place.
I've now eaten at Wasabi House four times in the last three weeks. At first, I carefully selected individual items from the menu. But after my second visit, I started ordering "chef’s choice" and haven’t looked back. They offer several nigiri/sashimi combination sets in various sizes, and each one has been a masterclass in quality, balance, and beauty. Every single piece is prepared with precision—from the sear on the toro to the yuzu-kissed salmon. Truly next-level.
I’ve done both dine-in and pickup, and both experiences are excellent. When you order pickup, they pack the sushi in a beautiful wooden box that looks and feels like a gift. It's an incredibly thoughtful and elevated touch that shows just how much pride they take in presentation—even to go.
The staff is welcoming, and the presentation is immaculate. The fish is clearly fresh, the rice perfectly seasoned, and the cuts elegant. Even the standard offerings, which my daughter tried, were fantastic— “the best she’s ever had.”
One note: Fridays are incredibly busy—it’s nearly impossible to get near the place. I now go on other days, which are much more relaxed and still just as excellent.
If you’re a sushi purist, an adventurous eater, or just someone who appreciates when a restaurant goes above and beyond—you need to visit Wasabi House. I can’t recommend it...

Read moreIt's been years since I called Wasabi House but it was Friday and I was going to treat myself to a King Crab special roll and grab an eel roll for my husband. I phoned in the order and was told that they no longer offer the King Crab (subtle red flag), so I defaulted to a Spider Roll. When I asked for a side of ginger dressing, the very nice woman offered the lunch special and said that I could get both soup and salad for $18. I repeatedly asked, clarifying that I could get a Spider Roll with a lunch special and twice she said yes. (I should have known better. Second red flag.) The place was completely empty when I arrived, but it was 3:00. They were so nice. My husband had wanted sushi for dinner, so I told her that we might be back for dinner. She said, "See if you like it, first." Strange. (Third red flag.) Well, the so-called Spider Roll was deep-fried faux crab (what you get in a California Roll). Who does such a thing? The eel was awful! The salad dressing was tasteless and the soup was indescribable. A total waste of money. Keeping the name is such a discredit to the OG Wasabi House. East Brunswick is losing far too many decent restaurants. Sushi...
