Prior to the Shutdown of 2020, my girlfriend and I had eaten at SushiO several times; we particularly liked the two salmon and mango combo rolls they made exclusively. It was, in short, one of our favorite restaurants in New Jersey. Yesterday we were in the area, and finally stopped by after over a year, and were looking forward to another satisfying meal of great sushi. But it is no longer the same.
We searched the menus but could only find one of the salmon and mango combo specialty rolls we used to enjoy. The waitress informed us, when we asked, that the menu had been revamped and the other salmon and mango combo roll was no longer offered; she went on to tell us to not pay attention to the pages of photos, as many of the dishes portrayed were no longer available… That should have been yet another clue.
We ordered 4 rolls: Two salmon and mango specialty rolls, a spicy salmon specialty roll, and a Boston Roll. When our food finally came, I noticed that the mango chunks were somewhat harder than I recalled…the reason was pretty obvious to me: the mango they used was not ripe enough. While I almost dismissed that difference, my girlfriend spat out the pieces of mango, saying, “This is not mango! What is this?” She tried another with the same result: the mango was unchewable.
We complained about the mango being far too hard, and I told the waitress that it was no doubt not ripe yet. The waitress claimed that they no longer used the yellow mango they used to use, that these were Mexican mangoes. Both my girlfriend and I have had Mexican mangoes, and generally find them not only juicy, but soft, unlike these.
We also told her the Boston Roll was nowhere close to being what it’s name claimed, and that the shrimp – which could barely be seen among the vast forest of shredded lettuce - was not real shrimp.
In the end, despite the spicy salmon not really being all that spicy, we agreed to pay only for that roll…and left. We left there yesterday having no intention of ever going back.
SushiO was once a marvelous place to eat quality sushi – but not now. Given the absence of customers, unlike in days gone by, it looks like people are catching on to this fact.
During the shutdown, perhaps the place was sold and the new owners who kept the respected name – if so, they’ve failed miserably in keeping the once-stellar reputation the name had.
Such a shame. We used to love eating there.
I am firm in my admonition that the reader should AVOID this restaurant at all costs. Unless you want to throw your money away and not...
Read moreThe 2 stars I gave are for the mediocre sushi. My fiancé and I called an order in for 10 rolls for a party. When placing the order over the phone I had explained this order was for an intimate party and I'd like a party tray. She said that they don't have a "party tray package", but that we can order all of these rolls and they'd be able to put it on a nice tray.
Upon arrival to pick the sushi up, my fiancé was greeted with a bag of 5 to go boxes of tin foils with the sushi inside sushi. What a terrible presentation to walk into a party with! To make matters worst, they offered 2 small containers of spicy mayo. When he asked for more, the lady basically explained to him that his order was too small for more and charged him for the extra ones...
Read moreSushi O is constantly and continuously the most amazing Sushi with the friendliest staff the world of Sushi has ever known. While I visit often for lunch and find it great for a group of 6-8 from the office, the price is reasonable enough to do so. It's also a BYOB for those looking for a more romantic experience and the lighting and decor definitely lean toward romantic.
The roll selections are out of this world like the Kenji Fusion roll that is my favorite. The Sashimi is so fresh and comes with a simple salad and miso soup. The dressing is made in house and is so fresh... you can take home a pint for $5.
This is a smaller venue, but it's truly a place worth an hour drive from Phillly to find the best...
