La Tiendita Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Elizabeth City

Hubby was famished and jonesing for some Mexican. Did my Google search for Mex and this location had the highest rating. Sadly, that wasn't going to reflect on our visit.

Starting with the hostess who ignored me as we walked through the restaurant to the warm as outside temperature inside the restaurant (my sour cream was melting before my plate made it to our table) to the server who couldn't be bothered to give us her sole attention to the fact that she forgot both of our requests for to go cups but managed to bring me back my $20 change in a $10, $5 and $5 ones (I guess to be sure she got a tip).

To be honest, she's lucky she got $6 bucks on our $29 tab. I took $2 bucks off her tip for her lack of concentration (the phone rang and literally in the middle of me ordering she said excuse me and went to answer the phone-when she managed to make it back she was then distracted by the tip of her pen) and forgetting our to go cups.

My husband yelled after her twice "excuse me" and despite being less than 10 ft from our table she appeared not to hear us.

This is a one and done for us. Too many let downs for 1...

This is the only Mexican joint I eat at in Elizabeth city. I love spicy food and their Carne Mexicana never let's me down. Delicious, bold, flavorful, cuts of meat cooked in a spicy red sauce. Absolutely delicious. I recommend ordering it with a pitcher of ice water. You'll need it. The salsa is delicious as well, as are their street tacos. Their Chile Rellano is great also and i like that they don't use too much breading. The service is good within the restaurant. But I'm rating it generously a 3 due to the take out service. It is truly as if the cooks resent you for not dining in. I would honestly say if the 10 or so times I've ordered to go, they've blatently screwed up my order 7 or so of times. VERY frustrating, particularly when you're working from home and can't just run back up there. If you get food to go, I strongly urge you to thoroughly check your order before you leave. This was our first time eating here and it was a true delight.

The food is good, clean, healthy, fresh, looks good, tastes amazing.

We missed lunch by about 15 minutes so we ended up ordering ala carte. I got a shredded chicken burrito and a side of Mexican rice, he got beef and chicken burrito. We shared the rice. The burritos were the perfect size and well filled and seasoned. No artificial garbage ingredients.

The chips were really fresh and we could tell the oil they cook them in is kept clean. They gave us white sauce along side red salsa at no charge.

This place is incredibly authentic as well. Very clean inside and out. Very comfortable and beautiful decor. Great music. All around just an awesome experience. We spent less than $16 for a full meal for two people.
