I really really wanted to like this place. I understand it's new and there will be hiccups but one thing that can help with that is great customer service, which this place is lacking. I think they're lacking that and basic skills needed to run a restaurant.
First off, the wait was extremely long. It wasn't very crowded at all, this place is just extremely slow. We put our name on the list at 1245 and were not seated until almost 145 and they closed at two. There wasn't a line of people waiting before us or anything so it was strange that it took so long. I think maybe they were short staffed and disorganized.
After being seated we were told they weren't serving lunch and that they were out of biscuits, Turkey sausage and one kind of waffles. I only came for the biscuits so it was quite disappointing. My friend asked if they could make more and she was told no, and that they would not make anymore until Sunday. Which is understandable, I guess. I didn't think biscuits were all that complicated and with them having the word "biscuit" in the name, you'd think they would ensure that they had plenty.
The absolute worse part of our visit was the way the food came out. There was 3 kids and 3 adults in our party and 2 of the adults food came out first. They had a breakfast burrito and chicken and waffles and home fries. The rest of us had ordered simple things: pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and home fries, and one order of chocolate chip pancakes. It was another 10 minutes before the chocolate chip pancakes and bacon came. The rest of us sat waiting for well over 20 minutes for our plain pancakes. You would think pancakes would be quick and simple. By the time the three of us got our food the rest of our party was completely done eating. It was very frustrating. Our waitress was new and forgot nearly every thing that I requested, like butter, straws syrup etc. That wasn't that big of a deal because mistakes happen. But I was truly baffled as to why it took so long for our simple order to come out. The 3 of us that ordered pancakes were the very last people in the restaurant served. It made no logical sense as to why plain pancakes would take an hour to make vs the fried chicken and a breakfast burrito which was brought out first.
I probably would not go back just because of the service and the food wasn't that great. The pancakes were decent. I tasted my friends chicken and it was flavorless with no seasoning. I did have a side of home fries that were pretty tasteles. The bacon was ok.
I will say that they did not charge us for our meal which I thought was very nice. But the waitress did make sure to tell us that they were comping the meal this time but that we needed to understand that they were a new business and that the wait will probably be long next time and they wouldn't be able to give a discount next time. I thought it was a strange statement because I never once complained about the wait, I actually didn't complain about anything because I could tell she was flustered. I did express disappointment about the biscuits and that was it. I felt bad because I forgot to tip the waitress, I always tip because I know they work hard. I just had a headache because I hadn't eaten all day and it took forever to get our food.
I do hope they get the kinks worked out, I love supporting small business but there wasn't anything that would make me come back. I love biscuits but I can't fathom waiting that long again and then them possibly being out of biscuits.
I gave it 1 star for the pancakes and the fact that they comped our meal (even though I felt like the waitress tried to make us feel bad for...
Read moreAfter waiting a month for the newly opened kinks to work out, we decided it was time to give it a try. We knew their would still be a wait on a Sunday at noon, but not nearly 3 hours before we'd leave.
Upon walking in, I made my way through the standing room only crowd and to the counter where I attempted to add our name to the wait list. I barely got a word out before the lady at the counter, shut me down and let me know she was way too busy, but she'd help me in a minute. She did not and she was rude. About 10 minutes passed by before someone friendly, finally asked if we had been helped. We were told 30 minutes, which is understandable. During our wait, which was more like 45 minutes, we had no where to go to be out of the way, but we tried our best to be still and 'compact'. We got bumped around quite a bit and hollered at by a server to not block her. During our wait, another couple came in and within a couple minutes, the lady who had been in the kitchen sipping coffee, handwriting on a notebook and making cocktails, who couldn't have missed seeing myself and my son stand at the counter for easily 20 minutes, breezily walked out, looked right past us, and greeted the new couple while offering to bring them a drink. I was shocked and even told them how they must be special, since we'd been waiting a while and not even greeted with any kindness.
When we were finally seated, we waited another 20 minutes before even placing an order for coffee/water/beverages, and our server just happened to be the same rude lady who was at the counter when I attempted to put our name on the list. Another 20 minutes passed before we were able to place an order. By this time, I noticed everyone at the counter, were people who had came in after we did. They were eating food by the time we were just placing an order.
During our 30 minute wait for our food to arrive, the same gal who was making cocktails, walked by, again in such a breezy fashion, while the servers were running laps, and she offered to fill our coffee. I kept my mouth shut because I was getting frustrated. She must have sensed my frustration so she tells us, "It's a long wait but trust me, the food is worth it." No apology. Just that we need to keep waiting for the food, that is already pricey to begin with.
Our plates finally arrives. It's been nearly 2 hours since we walked in the door. The food is dropped at our table without any sort of apology, and the same server is running off before even checking to see if we need anything else. Toast was not accompanied by jelly or butter. And my husband had to ask for hot sauce. After scarfing our food, which was good but not worth well over 2 hours of wait time, we wait another 20 minutes for our check. I finally had to get up and walk out. Hoping the server would see me missing and bring the check so my husband could pay and we could get out of there. We had other things on our schedule for the day than to spend 3 hours, watching the lack of time management leave us waiting twice the time that it took others to be seated and served.
I was REALLY hoping this place would be amazing. I wasn't even sure if I should leave a review after only one bad visit, but after reading the other reviews with similar experiences, and now realizing the owner, Diana, was the one casually offering cocktails to the others, while overlooking those who had waited for a long time without even a smile, along with her excuses to us, minus any comp or apology, I figured it was time to share our lackluster experience.
Please improve. I want this place to succeed. Elkhart deserves a good brunch spot with good food and...
Read moreDefinitely come get tipsy! This is a fun, hip new family-run breakfast and lunch restaurant in downtown Elkhart. Absolutely worth going to, but get here early. Closed Monday.
The food is homemade, down to the biscuits and even the sausage. It has a great unique twist, and is a definite step up from the normal, more mundane breakfast/lunch places in the region.
Atmosphere is kitschy, hip trendy with a homey touch. It was bright, vibrant, with fun music that wasn't too loud.
We were greeted by a nice man at the bar as soon as we walked in, and the smells of the food encouraged our appetites.
Service was quick and friendly. There are only 11 tables, plus about 10 bar seats, so probably not the best place to bring a large party, or be prepared for a wait if you do.
The biscuits are excellent. Quite filling, a bit crumbly, and excellent. I had the B&G, which was great, made better because they even had Cholula sauce in addition to Tabasco. You don't always find that, and I appreciate the upgrade in options. The gravy was good, but needed salt and pepper for my taste.
The hash browns were homemade, and that surprised me because I was expecting the normal frozen variety. Oh, was I wrong! They were very good, with a golden fried shell and almost mashed potato filling. Absolutely worth the try.
The breakfast biscuit sandwich was more than a mouthful. It pretty much took a fork to eat, and was very filling for the money.
I want to return to try the chicken and waffles, and the chicken and biscuits, plus the lunch menu looked fabulous.
This place could definitely be on DDD. It has the hallmarks of it, small kitchen, fun staff who cares, and very well presented, tasty food that is unique and excellent.
They have a bar, complete with bloody Mary's, and other brunch libations. I didn't try it, but it is an option for those who do.
Definitely try the Tipsy Biscuit. Homemade food with a...
