I've only eaten there 3 times; all three were this month (July 2016).
First two visits were ok. Not amazing; but ok.
This time was truly awefull.
It was just my daughter and I. She is 11 years old. And she's one of the sweetest, most loving kids in the world.
We sat at the bar counter this time, in seats close to the front register.
In front of us was a deep sink. In that sink (yet unrealized by us) was a red bucket; half-filled with hot water with some sort of blue sanitizer solution in it.
One of the waitresses kept throwing cups into the sink, from a distance. It was more time-efficient than taking a few steps closer and just setting the glasses into the sink.
Every time she did that, they landed in the red bucket and splashed us. It got in my daughter eyes, on the first shot, and then onto our drink glasses the second time.
I asked a server to get some napkins wet, to help my daughter get the stinging solution out of her eyes. She did. but didn't warn us that she soaked the napkins with super hot water; -adding further pain to injury. It took a moment for us to realize it was steaming hot, and by then it was too late. My daughter had already quickly pressed it to her eyes.
After the napkin cooled off a bit, my daughter used it to try to clean the corner of her eye out. I told her I can take her to the restroom, to try to rinse her eyes out better, but she said it was only enough contact to sting for a minute. she didn't think we needed to do more. the napkin would be good enough.
I explained to the servers what happened, while the manager (possibly the owner? short, stocky, but handsome-ish guy) stood a few feet away. He assured me that it was just "sanitizer", and then turned and walked away.
He's not a very welcoming sort of guy; but I thought this was serious.
So then I asked the servers about them installing a splash guard between that sink and the customers, so that it didn't keep happening.
They didn't give any meaningful response, other than point out they do have one ... for the other sink, at the other end of the bar counter. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with that information.
They didn't offer even an apology, as my daughter Kitani was still trying to rub the chemical water from her eyes.Even when we left, her eyes were still irritated.
I paid for our meal and I left our waitress a tip. I don't think she knew what was going on, because she had been busy elsewhere.
And since I'm bothering to write this review ...
The french toast was overpriced ($1.75 per piece). It seemed to be some weird prefab pancake, cut into the shape of bread, and then heated up on the grill. I was very salty, doughy, and had zero taste or texture resemblance to french toast. The sweet syrup they provided couldn't drown out the saltiness of it.
Also, their "large drinks" (nearly 2 bucks each) are served in a very small glass. That's ok for soda, since refills are free (which just makes your waitress work harder, unless that succeeds in guilting you into not asking for more). But if it's a drink which there are no free refills for (like chocolate milk), then you've just paid far more for it than even a gas station would charge.
We were going to order burgers at first, but then the waitress showed me how very small those are too.
The business model there is "pay the same per item as anywhere else, but get much less and far inferior food."
Locals seems to like the ambiance; since it's an old candy shop. I say it's not a fair trade off, for the human decency that isn't on the menu.
I still just can't get over how they splashed chemicals onto our drink glasses and into our faces and dismissed it like it was nothing. or that the one server (a very pretty college-age girl) just kept doing it, while she watched the tidal splashes fly in all directions (including onto the adjacent areas where foods (like icecream) were stored and prepared).
I felt like I was in a poor scripted comedy.
My daughter never wants to go back; and I...
Read moreOK so I’m gonna start off with a good points first to explain why I gave it three stars and not more or less. The place was small cozy relaxing atmosphere cute little restaurant. Our waitress was quiet but really sweet. We did not have the best experience but the owner did end up copying our whole meal so we did not have to pay anything. And you will see if that is not clouding my review. The whole problem with our breakfast was you can see them cook everything for little kitchen is right there in the front by the soda bar. From the beginning when our waitress told the female cook what we wanted she seem like she had asked you that she was put out for having to cook. Then she had no gloves on and started to cook a lot of the stuff with her hands which is not a big deal to the course when you cook at the sheets going to burn off the germs and it should be OK. The problem was is once it was about done she started picking stuff up off the grill with her hands and putting it on plates with no gloves. Then some of the food got put in the microwave to make it hot. Now for the food The hashbrowns weren’t too bad they were lightly golden. The biscuits and gravy he was good the gravy was amazing. We would definitely go there again for the biscuits and gravy as long as the same female cook is not the one cooking our food. The ham and sausage was good wasn’t it spectacular but it was good. Now the downside is I order French toast. When you get French toast do you expect it to be normal golden looking and egg batter. This French toast unfortunately looks like pancakes they dip the bread and a pancake batter. So that was the first thing I complained about and then I complained about the lady cooking with her hands. And I also forgot that once the food was done the biscuits and gravy was put in the microwave to make it hot enough. Now with all that said and done we are willing to go back a second time and give them a second shot to kind a redeem themselves. And if so I will definitely put a...
Read moreThis landmark has been a part my life since I was 4 years old. I will be turning 64 in 2023, hopefully an opportunity will present itself for a return visit. A few years ago I along with my wife, my daughter, and my In-Laws visited Goshen to visit my sister and my Best friend. We stopped off to experience the Olympia after many years. One of my favorite meals as a child going there with my mother was the tomato soup with crackers and a grilled cheese sandwich and a Green River drink. On a cold day this was perfect to warm you up. My most favorite chocolates was the Turtles. Mmmm, this chocolate candy was the best combination of good and yummy. The building definitely feels like a step into the past that enables you to experience wonderful memories. When I was little, one of my best memories was standing outside the Olympia looking inside the large window on the North side of the building to watch the person with the responsibility to make the best chocolate. Even though he could see me watching, he would just smile and continue with his preparation. The people are always friendly, the candy is great tasting the diner food is actually very good to...
