McCrum's Bakery — Restaurant in Elmwood Park

Extremely unprofessional and lacking of knowledge in customer service etiquette. I'm so appalled. There seemed to be some confusion though text with Ashley the person responding who gave a price with out asking anything about what I wanted. So I called and spoke with the "counter girl" I told her what I wanted and she gave me a different price of $80 after asking the baker. I've ordered non decorated fondant cakes from here at the end of last year multiple times, and was charged the same price each time according to size . I've also referred many customers. So All I asked was how come the prices went up from the previous times I ordered which was Double; mind you....She stumbled over her response and replied the prices went up. I said ok , no problem that should be fine. I asked her to get back to me with a price to add drip and she said I will text you. Then I receive a message from what I believe to be the baker or owner Randy. They must not really need business with how the conversation went . Apparently the counter girl thought $80 was breaking my bank when I asked why the price went up...when in reality I was ordering for someone else, whom I already told what it cost me when i ordered other times , and i needed to confirm with them . Instead of him calling and clarifying, him and his counter girlfriend came up with something weird in their heads. Mind you i was very easy going and a polite customer at the time. He also Cleary does not take time to read responses properly as he responded back ruder when I said- If the price of $80 (which she gave me from him) , is to little now for two cakes I understand . He thought i was saying his cakes were little and insulting him. Such strange behavior. I did mention twice calling might be a better way to handle whatever miscommunication there was since his counter girlfriend didn't seem to be very good at her job either, clearly. I'd attach the text conversation but I would rather make sure this review comes up. I hope they can fix this issue by not doing this to their next patron which surly will not be sent by me . I ordered from a lovely baker in Hackensack, she was very polite. I personally would pay double for better customer service. They honestly don't deserve one star but since I'm nice I gave two because the cakes are alright. I've had better cake and craftsmanship though, it was more for convenience because they are close and the cakes are more for show. Good luck to future customers on...

I have nothing but all wonderful words to say about this place . I don’t know how their cake taste but I do know that customers here are very valued, which is the biggest part of any business. I had ordered a baptism custom cake 3 days before my daughter baptism . Set it all up exactly how I wanted, canceled other 2 bakeries even for less money because this place promised to do all I ordered exactly the way I wanted . The night before the baptism I came to pick up my cake just to be told : “ what cake ?” I can’t even describe the devastation and the emotions that I was having at the moment since it was 7:30 pm on a Friday night while realizing I have no cake. I ran to the local store to pick up a cute looking but not custom cake and no one to even wright a name on it. I was looking through the local bakeries almost all night to find this one that opens super early and there I went to try to salvage my cake , somehow. Ofcourse I didn’t expect a new cake 3h before the baptism but the baker, and I’m assuming the owner , offered to spruce it up by making the righting on The cake on the spot free of charge, though he was in the middle of a lot of cake orders to be made for today..And thigh i didn’t get my cake the way I wanted snd only got the pretty righting on another stores cake , I’m grateful from the button of my heart that he saved the day and my broken heart from the other bakery . Someone else might’ve turned me away being that it was last minute, them being busy or not their cake. This is a true definition of a customer service and a local small business that strives and cares. I will...

I can’t say enough great things about McCrum’s Bakery. Randy knocked it out of the park with the custom cake he made for my sister’s 30th birthday. From the flawless design (which matched my reference photo exactly) to the insanely delicious flavor—every detail was perfect. The cake was super moist, and the raspberry mousse filling was the perfect balance of sweet and light. (Note: edible image on cake has been drawn over to respect the privacy of the person in the photo.)

Out of all the bakeries I contacted, McCrum’s had the most fair pricing by far. On top of that, Randy was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the entire process. This was actually my second cake from McCrum’s—he also made my wedding cake back in 2020, which was a huge hit—and five years later, the quality and care are still unmatched. His cakes are worth every penny.
