After a solo road trip gone wrong, I was gunning it back home to LA from East Oregon. After an 11 hr day on the road, I stopped in the quaint little town of Ely. It was historical and very interesting, but ultimately a place I was a tad concerned about staying at as a solo traveler. I can't believe I was ever worried, because everyone was so helpful and welcoming, and finding this gem on my way out the next day was just the icing on the cake.
Absolutely AMAZING coffee, so much so that I was startled when I tried it, because I had tried a lot of local coffee shops on this trip (at every town I'd stopped in) and none compared. The espresso was great, and more so than that the syrups were unique (not just standard Torani syrups) & perfectly proportioned to the drink.
The atmosphere was inviting and warm, and really focused in on that local feel / love for the area that I really enjoy from local spots. The teas I also bought have been stellar. All in all, an amazing stop, and I wished I could've spent a few more days here if only to get the chance to try more of their drinks! I hope to get the chance to stop here...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place! It has nice atmosphere, and the location is good. BUT, when we went in, at least, the "barista" had clearly not been adequately trained.
Bad signs when you're looking for an espresso drink: porta filters sitting on the counter (makes them cold), pre-ground coffee in the grinder (stale), milk frothing done haphazardly, single dose porta filters in use. When I saw the previous customer's espresso come blasting out in around 10 seconds (should be 25ish), my suspicion was confirmed.
As much as I wanted to like Taproot, and I wanted to support a local business, I'm not going to pay $5.29 for a cappuccino that will, at best, be bad. The knowledge is out there, especially in 2024, so there's just no excuse for this kind of poor performance.
I sincerely hope this comment is taken as constructive criticism, because with a few hours of training for the staff all of these problems can be eliminated. I used to train baristas and manage cafes, so I know how hard it is to get good employees, but it simply...
