Happy Garden — Restaurant in Ely

Passing through Ely and based on reviews decided to give this restaurant a try. Very happy that we did! I ordered the pad thai. It was not the best pad thai I have ever had but it was very good! Not too greasy or heavy, good variety of vegetables, and yummy tofu. I'll probably order it again tomorrow. My partner ordered pot stickers and he enjoyed them. They were not greasy, and the dumplings were both thick and light with the perfect crispy outside. The dipping sauce was 10/10. The service was very quick and the owner called to let us know when the order was ready. It is take-out only. We ate lunch at the park a couple blocks East. It's a nice park, clean, trash cans available, bathrooms with flushing toilets and a drinking fountain. The town is doing construction so the atmosphere was very noisy but that is not the restaurants fault. As of today we hear that the construction will go on for at least another 3 months. Just wanted to give a little PSA. Happy Garden downtown Ely kicked us out today and refused to serve us because last time we went our 1 year old baby maybe made a mess on their floor. We cleaned up big pieces like always leaving rice which you can’t really pick up with your hands so my husband asked for a broom or vacuum from the bus boy and he said not to worry about it because he would clean it up. We eat there once a week at least and every restaurant we go to we always clean the best we can and ask for a broom. No one ever gives us one. The owner very rudely told us we weren’t welcome in their restaurant because he had to clean up the floor around our table. I’m fuming to say the least and can’t believe how rude and discriminating they were. We always tip well over 20%. Just be advised if you have little ones that you better not...

We go in and the nice woman tells us they are busy and there’s a wait to order. So we said we would just come back and walk around. There’s an old Radio Shack, so we go talk to the owner first a bit. The old time pharmacy further down the road is nice as well. Then we sat on a bench across from the casino, and watched people stagger around and curse.

We did eventually get our food, fried vegetable chow mein noodles that was large enough for the two of us to share. It was absolutely delicious.

Unfortunately, the take away ordering at the window wasn’t optimal. It looks likethe dining room is now being used for storage, which is too bad as it looks like it had a classic decor. I guess Covid killed that.
