This place is Judgmental and Racist!
My Husband, my 4 year old daughter and I Iive in Englewood and have been dying to try this restaurant as it is the only one in our neighborhood that we have been unable try. One Sunday afternoon about 3 weeks ago we were passing by and decided we would stop by to see if we were able to get a table. My husband pulled in front and ran out to see if there were any available tables. He is a man of color who was wearing a baseball cap , jeans, and a T-shirt. Before he could walk inside a man came out of the restaurant with his hand out in a "stop" position and stopped by husband before he was even able to step inside of the establishment he then asked "can I help you". My husband ask if it was possible to get seating for the family and the gentlemen quickly replied "No sorry we have no available reservations for today" and quickly turned around and went back inside.
My husband came back in the car feeling very offended and judged, he was highly bothered by the fact that he was not even able to step foot in the restaurant. I decided to call immediately after he came back in the car (2-3 min after) and see if I would be able to get a reservation if I pretended to be unrelated to the reservation my husband had just tried to make, so thats what I did. I called and a woman answered the phone I politely asked if she would be able to accommodate our family of 3 at ANY point during the evening (since the gentlemen had said that he had NO reservations available at all for the rest of the evening). She put me on a brief hold and said "Absolutely! would you be able to come in now?" I quickly replied yes thank you and ended the call.
We turned back around to go back to the restaurant ( we were only a few blocks away at that point) so that my husband could inform them of this discrepancy. He went inside and the man he encountered previously, along with the woman with whom I made the reservation with were standing together at the front door. He approached them with the evidence of discrimination, racism and judgement. They were unapologetic and cold. They had no excuses for the blatant disrespect, and the sheer judgement they placed on my family. It was clear that we weren't welcome there. It is truly disappointing to know that this discrimination and racial selective behavior still exist so obviously within minutes of our home.
I would give this restaurant no stars if I could. The way they treat potential customers is disgraceful, offensive and tacky. They should be blasted for being racist and I would never spend my money in a place where they could STOP YOU OUTSIDE if they felt you weren't the caliber of human they wanted eating in their establishment based on the color...
Read moreI went on a Thursday at around 7pm with my boyfriend. When I asked we could get a table, the hostess asked if I had a reservation. I said no, but I looked around and the restaurant had only 2 tables with guest. My boyfriend then stepped in and asked if she could please get us a table. She excused herself then shortly returned. She accommodated us. We had a nice time and the food was good. My boyfriend and I were enjoying ourselves. Then things changed...we were never offered and dessert and a cup of coffee was placed in front of my boyfriend... we got a very uncomfortable feeling. The hostess saw my boyfriend looking around to see if anyone else was coming and she came to us and said "you want something?". We thought that to be kind of rude. We asked for the check politely, paid and we're on our way out. My boyfriend held the door for me and when he turned around he overheard that hostess talking about us. He was furious! I don't know what they said because he wouldn't tell me but he said he would never return. I hope it wasn't anything racist..but we were treated poorly at the end. I should mention that my boyfriend is of Italian decent and I am Hispanic. It would be a shame if that was the case... needless to say, we won't be...
Read moreReally surprised that anyone would give this restaurant a negative review. Starting with the food...in a word DELICIOUS. The food is ALWAYS fresh. I have brought many New Yorkers to dine there and we love it. Yes it is BYOB but the food from start to finish makes up for it. The owners are warm and hospitable. The restaurant is small, cozy and ALWAYS crowded but Elvis the owner goes out of his way to find a table for you. In reference to a comment below, they ARE NOT RACIST so let's be clear, not even by a long shot these are good people making really great food. The wait staff are attentive to every detail. It really is on par with any upscale restaurant in Manhattan. One more thing Trattoria Carpacio is not anywhere near Palisades ave which is like restaurant row here in Englewood yet it remains crowded. I highly recommend...
