Best Mexican restaurant in Eugene.
Stopped in for mid-week lunch. Place was surprisingly empty (scary empty), but decided to trust the reviews.
Glad we did. Homemade perfection. The chilie relleno was the best I've ever tasted, and I've been tasting them since I was kid in Santa Ana; so, for over 60 years.
It wasn't just the pablano though, although it was fresh, meaty, and full of flavor. It was the obviously scratch made ranchera sauce that totally took the dish to a new level. So much flavor!
The beans were excellent too. Flavor and texture; nothing beats home made. Simple, but seldom worth mentioning in a restaurant; except in this case. A bowl of their beans and some tortilla chips would be an outstanding shareable.
The chicken enchiladas were excellent too. Flavorful, moist, and a large quantity of chicken. But again, it was the sauce - this time green - that really took the flavor train to a new destination. I'm lucky (and glad) my wife let me have a bite.
Lastly, the carne assada taco. It too was flavorful. It's preparation was slightly different than what I'm used to. But, I believe in keeping an open mind to what mom & pop's interpretation of a dish is.
They didn't miss on their interpretation. There's so many ways to present a taco. They use a dice rather than slice on their beef, and they use - offered and I accepted - pico & guacamole, in addition to the usual suspects of white onions and cilantro and a wedge of lime.
The pico and guacamole were flavorful, but overpowered the simple flavor of a great traditional taco. Next time I'll try it less dressed.
Great service, clean and friendly atmosphere, excellent flavor, very reasonable prices.
I hope the place is packed the next time I come by (in...
Read moreThe owner and his wife are super friendly and make us feel like family. They had a restaurant here 20 years ago and it was amazing. It is the same recipes and great food. Portions are big for the price. Meat quality is good. Flavorful meat. Refried beans are on point and not runny but not super thick. Their homemade salsa is where the magic is at. It adds that extra bit of flavor. Their chile relleno is authentic, it’s a real fresh pablano pepper that stuffed battered and fried. All the other places in town use canned peppers and they just don’t compare. The torta is perfect! The bread isn’t super dry, it stays together even with carnitas, mayo, salsa and guacamole on it. Their carne asada is a good portion, good quality meat, flavorful and the roasted jalapeño is the best I’ve had in town. They home make all of their drinks. The tamarindo is tart, sour with a little sweet. Jamaica is sweet but not like koolaid. The horchata is the perfect blend of creamy, vanilla with a little bit of cinnamon and they don’t use a heavy cream and it’s not watered down. My friends and I eat there once a week because it’s the best place in town with consistent quality and service. Best bang for your buck! If you make good friends with the wife she will even ask to see if they can cook off the menu foods if they aren’t slammed. Her chocoflan...
Read moreThis place needs some help. The food was NOT GOOD. My niece and I both have food poisoning. Their “carne asada” was not even seasoned and it was more fat/gristle than meat. The enchilada sauce tasted like tomato soup with chili powder in it. And a LOT of garlic. But no fresh garlic anywhere. The first round of chips were stale. My sisters burrito was inedible. Their pico was dry as if it had been sitting on the counter for 8+ hours. The guacamole was NOT fresh. The made my friends burrito wrong and instead of remaking it, they brought MOST of what was missing from the burrito for her to add herself. She also didn’t have ANY silverware to make this happen. It was $40 wasted on food. Their daughter was the one taking orders and she was so sweet and wanted us to like it so much. But it was truly, gross. We left without a word. But early the next morning we are all sick. I felt the need to say something. I hope they don’t make more...
