Trattoria D.O.C. — Restaurant in Evanston Township

I genuinely was looking forward to a pasta dinner and it ended up being an uncomfortable experience. The younger staff was really welcoming, sat us right away, and was quick to bring us water and bread. We ordered a bottle of wine and our entrees. The bottle arrived abs the waiter showed us the front label correct vineyard and type of red. My partner tried it as is the normal practice, but once the waiter left we realized we were given the wrong year (more recent) than was on the menu. When we brought this up to the waiter he didn’t say anything to us he just grabbed the bottle and walked away. He came back asked what difference between the two years specifically upset us and caused us to say something. After my partner responded the waiter again just walked away. It was an incredibly uncomfortable experience. It would have been no big deal and we would have ordered something else but the waiter’s handling was oddly confrontational.

As we left my partner mentioned to the manager that we ordered but were going to leave because of the uncomfortable interaction. She simply said ok and carried on. Dinner was really disappointing. I had really high hopes. The calimari fritti was rubbery and the marinara sauce had the consistency of passata and was extremely bland. I ordered the bucatini all'amatriciana and it tasted like barbecue. They didn't use pancetta, it tasted like hickory smoked bacon. Amatriciana is supposed to be sweet, tomatoey and spicy. But there was no tomato taste to it at all, it wasn't spicy and the bowl was filled with grease. My husband had the tagliatelle, which also seemed like it was swimming in grease. The good thing is the pasta for both dishes was cooked perfectly. The waitress kept correcting our pronunciation of the dishes, which was irritating and made me self-conscious. We went for dinner last night and everything was fantastic. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I could not decide what to order and I noticed that they offer small plates for some of their entrees. Between the 2 of us, we tried 4 dishes. I had the Mista Salad with chicken and Spaghetti with garlic and oil and added shrimp. Both were cooked/prepared to perfection! He had Spaghetti Carbonara and Bucatini Amatriciana and said both were great! Lindsey was our server and she was professional, efficient, and super friendly!
