This is, without a doubt, the best Barbecue that I’ve had in the state of New Jersey. I had smoked turkey with baked beans, Mac n cheese, and banana pudding, and it cost me $20 which is a very reasonable price, plus they threw in cornbread.
I asked the cashier how the turkey was smoked and he was able to easily answer that the whole bird was smoked over oak and then sliced. The meat was wonderful, tender with great flavor.
They have six different kinds of barbecue sauce, including a honey sauce from Tupelo Mississippi, which I was happy to see, being from Mississippi myself. The Kansas City sauce was some of the best and most authentic KC sauce I’ve had outside of KC itself. The Memphis sauce was also pretty spot on. There was also a Maryland sauce and a West Virginian Smokey mountain sauce, and a Texas sauce. The Texas sauce was A1 and Worcestershire sauce which was unique and tasty, though it seems to be a stretch as Texas bbq doesn’t usually use much sauce. I was a bit surprised by the lack of a more vinegar based sauce, but with the other great choices I didn’t miss it too much.
The baked beans were good and the Mac n cheese was as well. Neither were anything to write home about, but they were good (the beans were better than the Mac n cheese), and I would eat them again. The cornbread was actually quality, and I can’t stress this enough, seeing as how many bbq places serve awful cornbread these days. This was no floured up cake that was mildly corn flavored, it was real cornbread while still being a little sweet. The banana pudding was good, again, nothing special like Tennessee pudding, but I would certainly buy it again.
The restaurant itself is wonderfully set up in the manner of a classic bbq joint, with a queue around the side of the restaurant that leads to the order counter and the meat counter. There is tasteful military decor from across the country all over the walls and booths and the interior is all wood with nice wooden booths coming out of the wall and high top tables. Outside of the restaurant, you can smell the smokehouse, and you know you’re in for a treat.
As a southerner who has had a decent amount of bad barbecue while in New Jersey, I was so pleased to have my hopes met about this place and my expectations exceeded. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for good barbecue and I send my warmest wishes to the owner and the service team who were all nothing but helpful and kind to me. Once again, I am absolutely delighted to have had wonderful barbecue today; it reminds me of home at an unexpected time.

I've been frequenting Mission BBQ for lunch about twice a week lately, and while the delicious food certainly plays a role, it's the impeccable customer service I receive from Rebecca that truly keeps me coming back. [Image of Mission BBQ restaurant]

Read moreThe food was really good, I like how they have the BBQ sauce options on the tables, they also sell the BBQ sauces so you can take full size containers home if you like them, service was great, and the guy that wipes down they tables is extremely helpful, he doesn’t disturb, shadows, nor interrupts guests in anyway, but he seems to know what you need before you ask and is there to the rescue. Going to our table my wife was looking for the straws, before she had a chance to ask for them, he was there with a supply of straws. While I was in the restroom he had dropped by to see if we needed to-go containers, my wife decided to wait for my return prior to confirming. Unknowingly, I went to the front counter prior to my wife checking with me regarding a to-go container for my chicken, and he was there to grab the container and offer a lid for a side dish, I said no thank you for the lid, since I didn’t think we had a side dish to take with us. I walked away with the container, not knowing he was done with me. By the time I reached my table, I realized I could use that lid for the coleslaw I had forgot I wanted to take with me, I turn around to head back and he was there with the lid and the bag, that I didn’t think to request. Great job reading your customers!
I enjoyed the half chicken and my wife and daughter really enjoyed the pulled pork entrees.
I think my daughter took a photo of the restaurant on the way out, because she is planning a return and doesn’t want to forget the place.
After we were home, she confirmed she can keep the special cup for ever. Paying for the cup contributes towards a worthy cause, and allows $1 off your drink any time you return...
