We were a party of four. We ordered the octopus as an appetizer and it came with a sweet sauce, which was not informed when we asked about the dish, and this just ruined the flavor. The skin was slimy as well. The chimichurri that came with the skirt stake did not look fresh, so I didn’t taste it. The fried platains/tostones tasted old and bland. Another plate in our table was mixed seafood with garlic and mofongo. The seafood was not soft, kind of hard and gummy. My dish was mofongo with fish in creole sauce. I had only one bite and could tell there was something sweet in the sauce. Maybe ketchup or sugar, I think it was ketchup, I don’t know, but it was bad. I don’t get why you would sweeten the creole sauce. The mofongo was not good either. Bland.
There was only outside seating, unless there was indoor and it was not offered. The salt shaker was horribly rusty, the plates were huge and the tables small, which made it uncomfortable to eat, and they served water in disposable plastic cups. I highly disagree with establishments that serve in single use plastics, particularly sit down places with a mid-high price point. The waiter was nice, but not very specific when asked about the dishes, which can lead to disappointment when the food arrives.
We were really disappointed with the entire meal. We wen’t because of the reviews, but the reviews did not match the...
Read moreKalizo is a somewhat small and unassuming roadside restaurant with food that will not disappoint you. The simple wooden high tops and metal chairs make this establishment look a bit old and tired. But don’t mistake Kalizo for a simple eatery – the food here is well above average and the chefs demonstrated their skill with each dish they serve. Our seafood appetizer was well seasoned with lemon and salt, featuring mouth watering shrimp. We ordered a chicken and a red snapper dish, both of which were expertly prepared, hot off the grill, and seasoned to delight. The Mofongo at Kalizo is among the best in Puerto Rico. The ceviche tastes like it came right from the sea, at just the right temperature, and and was flavorful without overbearing. I do think the menu is a bit hard to understand and it isn’t clear what sides come with which dish or the differences between various types of fish or pork. Our waitress wasn’t the greatest at explaining the difference, but that may be a language issue and I’m sure it would be easier to understand if we were native speakers with better Spanish. Altogether, Kalizo provides a delightful meal, reasonably fast service, and...

Kalyzo in Fajardo offered a mixed experience during our recent visit, landing it a solid three-star rating. We tried a range of dishes, including the Croquetas de Mamposteao, Croquetas de Mac and Cheese, Mamposteao de Churrasco, Ribeye with Sauteed vegetables, and the Churrasco with Mamposteao. The food itself was, for the most part, just okay. While none of it was bad, it also didn't particularly stand out or impress. The flavors were decent, but given the price point, we expected a higher level of culinary execution.
What truly detracted from our experience was the service. Our server was notably absent throughout the meal, only appearing to take our order and deliver the food. There was no check-in to see how we were enjoying our meal, if we needed anything else, or to refill drinks. This lack of attentiveness was quite disappointing.
Ultimately, Kalyzo felt overpriced for the quality of food and the minimal service we received. While the setting is pleasant, the overall value just isn't there. If you're in the area and looking for an average meal, it might suffice, but don't expect...
