1000% recommend Vindu for any casual dining or catering. Hands down the best Indian restaurant / catering in the Metro Detroit Area.
Vindu was the caterer for our Indian-American Fusion wedding weekend with 300+ guests. They provided catering for 4 events, and they were able to design and execute on a unique menu for each event. They were also able to cater to the dietary preferences and restrictions for all wedding guests, including vegetarian and vegan, non-veg, spicy, and non-spicy options for those guests that have never had Indian food before. The food was a HUGE hit at our wedding, and we definitely recommend working with Vindu catering.
The only constructive feedback we have is that they ran out of sambar during our at-home Haldi event early on and ran out of naan (and the naan was mediocre) at our reception. However, there were so many varieties of food at each event so there was plenty of food for all guests. They could be better about refilling food stations as well.
We wanted to share some highlights from our experience working with Vindu and the biggest reasons why we chose to go with them as our Wedding caterer:
Amazing Customer Service: It was an absolute pleasure working with Venkat. My now wife and I were traveling from California to Michigan specially for tasting, and Venkat made sure to make all the arrangements needed for us to have a wonderful and productive tasting experience. He even sat down with us to capture our notes and feedback on the food items (to be honest, we didn’t have many changes because the food was amazing!). Since my family never had Indian food before and cannot handle much spice, Venkat suggested several non-spicy menu options and even worked with us to develop more “American-style” menu options such as pasta and pesto chicken.
Best Tasting Indian Food: This is now my favorite Indian restaurant. The food is so rich and flavorful. For our Haldi event, they had a live Dosa station, which was a big hit! During our Sangeet, they included a mix of Indian and non-Indian options – chaat station, Chiku shake, lychee mocktail, momos, etc. were some of the favorites. They even delivered chai and coffee very early in the morning for the Hindu Ceremony. Lunch after the Hindu Ceremony was a wonderful vegetarian meal with dhal, okra, etc. and delicious ladoos. Lastly, cocktail hour and reception food included a mix of American-style and Indian-style food for everyone to enjoy. Each event had a different menu, and we had over 60 unique items across all events.
Ownership and Coordination: Venkat was responsive in our group chat, took care of all planning and communications with our wedding planner and venue, and he took ownership in catering all events. He and his team arrived on time for all events and took care of all the set-up, labels and description, and refilling of...
Read moreLong post - Indian restaurant Rao Giri Vindhu in Farmington Hills So last night we had the worst restaurant experience ever!! We thought we will have a nice quick dinner at this Indian restaurant in Farmington hills… so it was a little bit of a drive but they have this Fish entree which I like … so we went. We arrived at about 7:40 and were seated immediately. The manager was pleasant and took our order immediately! We did not order any appetizer… just a chicken curry, Palak paneer and Tawa Fish ( pan fried fish which takes lesser time to make as compared to tandoori fish … so we were told) So we waited … and waited … and waited !! It was 45 mins since we ordered and when we asked the manager … he was apologetic and said oh the fish takes time it should be done in 5 mins!! The wait continues…. Ten mins later the hostess walks up and says sorry the fish should be ready soon!! Vik and I were exhausted and hungry but just said ok the darn fish is what’s causing the delay. Rest of the people in the restaurant seems to be getting some sort of appetizers out … we waited!! 1 hour and 10 mins later the waiter brought our food out … the phulkas were burnt and crisp like papad … the chicken, paneer and rice was cold … still no fish!! We waited again … then they brought out the Tawa Fish on a plate … cold!!!! OMG … I just cannot believe they treat their customers like that!!! The owner of the establishment… a very unimpressive character dressed sloppily… was called to our table. He did not bat an eyelid at the complaint … did not say a word!! Not a sorry … Let me check this … let me fix it … NOTHING just started at us like we were speaking in some alien language which he didn’t understand!!! Pathetic behavior!! So at close to 9 we walked out without eating dinner… and yeah … that happened! While we were waiting for our food at Rao Giri Vindhu, no attempt was made to make us comfortable… no chai/ coffee offered or attempt to make us sit thru the hour ten minute ordeal while we were so hungry!! To top it all … the general attitude was … this is what we have take it or leave it!! Complete disregard for their customers … complete lack of restaurant running skills and definitely no common sense!! I shudder to think about what happens in the kitchen if the management is so useless!! Never will we go back to this restaurant and will strongly recommend not soliciting this place at all!! They are freaking nuts and should not be in business! Lucky for us we were able to eat fresh hot pizza within ten minutes at Tomatoes Apizza across the street! The pizza was consumed quietly with much gratitude 🙏🏼!! Thank God for Tomatoes… we survived...
Read moreI don’t write a lot of reviews so you know when I do the restaurant is either really good or really bad. in this case the restaurant was by far one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the Novi/Farmington area.
I moved out of Detroit a couple years ago and since then every time I’m back in town visiting my parents, I always like to visit the local Indian restaurants. After trying Rao Gari I have now found my favorite one in the area. The portion sizes were generous, and the prices were solid especially when everyone else in town is raising their prices by so much.
I’ll start with the biryani. I took this one to go. This was by far my favorite biryani I’ve ever had. It was extremely soft and tasty not too oily, and the biryani was spiced perfectly. I had the Rao special biryani. 10/10
After that, I tried the butter chicken. It’s a pretty basic Indian dish I know, but these guys honestly did a great job. The thing I appreciated the most about this was you could get it less oily which a lot of places for some reason add a ton of oil to their curries, I’m not sure why, but I appreciated them making it less oily. It was very creamy and very delicious. 10/10
They had a special called dynamic Gobi. This was something like a cauliflower with some crazy flavors. I can’t describe, but it was fantastic not necessarily my favorite, but it was super flavorful and very delicious. 8/10
Lastly, I had the karapodi chicken (I prob spelled that wrong). This was super good and highly recommended. I ordered the extra spicy and they definitely accommodated as it was very. It was spiced well and tasted amazing. 9/10
Beyond that I have to say the service at this restaurant was top-notch. Me not being Indian sometimes makes it difficult to understand what some of these menu items are and some of Indian restaurants I go to in the area just kinda give me the most basic description that I could read online. Here the waitress, and some of the staff really helped me Through the menu. Understand a lot of the different items, and talked to me about the different flavors and their different takes on it. I really appreciated that along with the owner and some of the other employees as they constantly checked up on me to make sure everything was good. They brought me fresh bread and I just can’t say enough about how they treated me the whole time.
If I had to say the biryani was by far my favorite and that’s probably what I’ll be getting every single time beyond that I plan on trying more things so I’m...
