Formerly a family favorite with great service. We had an awful experience. I can feel sorry for the staff because the place has become disorganized due to poor management. We were served the wrong sushi rolls so my wife showed the waiter what was incorrect and he took it back to the kitchen. Not his fault. We were waiting a long time, and an owner who had seated us came by to ask if everything is ok. My wife said no, we received the wrong items and the waiter is taking care of it. No big deal at that point. She looked at the rolls we did eat and said; "but you ate the food" rather loudly. Other customers were turning to look. We hadn't asked for a refund. My wife said we don't want to discuss it further and the so called owner, Linn or Lynn spoke up about it again and my wife said that's enough just go. Then Lynn rather stupidly told my wife she is rude. I looked up and said we do not want to discuss it further. She said "but you are so rude". We weren't. She was rude and quite stupid. Finally she left. We waited about another ten minutes or so and asked a waitress to speak with the manager. After another long period, the bar manager came by and explained what happened in the kitchen and that "Lynn" is a co owner. The other owner is out of town a few weeks and things are tense. Well that explains it. I told the waiter to cancel the remaining items and bring a check. I sat there another ten minutes waiting and finally added up the items we were served, left $40.00 cash on the table to cover it and walked out. That the "owner" is accusing my wife on her review response of "not paying for food" is utter nonsense. So she is not just awkward, she is a liar. This business is failing. By the way, some gold fish are dying in the tank. They need to take care of the details. Not going back.
Update: Since the waiter abandoned us and I had to wait a long time with no check coming, I estimated the bill based on what we ordered and were actually served. I left $40.00 on the table and walked out. I took a closer look at the menu online and found I still owe $10.00 exactly plus tax. I will mail it to you.
You are still the liar...
Read moreThe truth of the matter is that I grew up in Farmington, so I don't have high expectations of anything when I visit. Had I encountered Tomo anywhere else, I would have graded it even more harshly.
Raz and I pulled in on a Wednesday evening at just after 6pm. While this would be super early for a big city, we anticipated this would be during or just before the dinner rush for a smallish city with a seriously family-oriented culture. We initially thought the place wasn't open since the patio tables were all folded down and the parking lot was nearly empty. We were even more surprised by the lack of other patrons when we entered the very stylish and modern interior. The hostess at the front was pleasant and efficient and seated us rapidly, providing us a large, private table with a good view of the sushi bar and menus.
Strangely, our menus were different. Raz's contained a Hibachi section and mine did not. Thus, he ordered one of the dinners being created with flare and gusto at Hibachi tables, while I ordered one of the Teriyaki specials that came in a sizzling plate. Mind you, both our meals were coming from the rear kitchens, no dramatic fire and knife work for us. I may have had more inspiring words and a fonder memory if we'd done the dinner-and-show experience of the Hibachi table.
Our meals were over $20 per plate, which was a big ticket for a little meal, especially considering that the flavor quality and mouth-feel was similar to Panda Express. Again, we are well aware that experience is different if you're getting the chef-driven show with your meal. Thus, longer tale abbreviated, we recommend if you do find yourself at Tomo to ask for the Hibachi tables and not the dining room side. The building is gorgeous, and it has the most urban, club-like ambiance I've ever encountered in Farmington, but the price is much too high unless you're getting entertainment...
Read moreIt was 3 months, 9 states, and 6 or 7 sushi houses ago that I ate here and despite the racism this place made the short list of best surprises of this year so far. We already know a 6'6" blackman in Farmington is usual, but the reaction I got from the itamae set the uncomfortable tone I had no choice but to ignore. They just stared at me...no "irasshaimase", or any greeting for that matter... So in the tradition of sampling their craft, I ordered one unagi as I sat down, all while being made to feel as though I had no clue of what I was doing, or doing in this establishment. I'm glad I drank the 2 beers while I was there because it kept me composed/buzzed enough to still tip 20% and walk away laughing at their ignorance.
The second time I visited, I figured I'd stay away from the dumb Asians and order from the bar. I waited for an actual 13 whole minutes sitting next to the waiters station being ignored by ponytail dude and a shapley woman before I could even get a drink, let alone order sushi. I had negimaki and 2 sapporo at the bar, left with about $75 of takeout, and still tipped 20%, because the sushi is that good.
The third time, I called in an order. I figured no one would offend me, at least until they saw it was me again, but at worst, the food would be ready, and I could leave quickly. Well the food wasnt ready or correct and I had to come back after getting home to get all of what I paid for.
To phil the manager: You tried to be polite when you saw me the first time and I guess that was because you had to. Not so much on the second and third visits, but I dont expect much from navajos anyway.
Again, the sushi here is remarkable...one of the top 5 sushi houses I've ever eaten in...BUT...the mindset of the locals working there, takes away all the...
