Lynn West takes you to the iconic Hugo’s in downtown Fayetteville, Arkansas, right off the Square. Open since 1977, this basement burger spot is consistently ranked among the Top 10 burgers in Northwest Arkansas and one of the region’s most iconic landmark restaurants. #fayettevillear #northwestarkansas #nwatravelguide #479 #fayettevillearkansas yo

How does one encapsulate one of the most Fayette-esque locations in a review on Google that pays tribute to the roots of a city immersed in post-Vietnam Hippie realness, as well as its sustainable Mother Earth vestige it’s enrobed in today? Well, You simply draw an analogous line to a beloved work that includes its namesake and centralizes itself on the shining star of the story, I’m speaking of Victor Hugo‘s Les Miserables, naturally. It’s about the bread y’all! Not just bread but sandwiches!!! Tucked away beneath Block Street in Fayetteville, this speakeasy-lite location is not your steak and potatoes kind of joint; yet It’s rooted in the hard-working middle class, “Sammiches are life!” kind of establishment. If you don’t whip out your phone with its flashlight feature on, you’re doing it wrong. Primarily lit only by the jubilant red “typewriters” neon sign on the back wall; it’s a bustling den of voices, clanking dishes, and glasses . I have been coming here since I attended the University of Arkansas all those many many years ago and it has without fail. Been my favorite restaurant without a sour note. Performed during any of the visits my entire time going there. Established in 1977 This restaurant has the cred and clout of a brick and mortar place that can claim its roots in Fayetteville’s illustrious history. The location is very very small, and you do have to navigate some steps to get down into the subterranean level that the restaurant occupies, but if you can maneuver through the maze of close knit tables and make your way to the restrooms without stumbling into someone else’s spinach dip, then you can do Hugo’s. The bar which runs the entire length of the restaurant is a great location for the casual solo Diner, but you can score a home run. If you catch one of the tables underneath the glass block sidewalk that doubles as one of the only sources of natural light in the location. Or next to the back table near the A4A mentioned typewriters neon sign. There are a bevy of sandwiches all containing wonderful breads that are thick and robust that the restaurant produces each day, but my favorite and by far the most unique item I’ve ever had is the veggie Reuben. Piled high with sprouts, portobello, mushroom and yummy Kraut, underneath a buttery toasted whole wheat and rye bread, this restaurant gives the Diner an amazing umami treat at the end with a back note of butter sprout and pickle hang time that stays with you long after you’ve polished off the side order of chips and having engaged in any discussion of the bread stealing character from Les Mis, and how she would’ve loved this restaurant had she attended a sorority here.

Okay sorry this was the only photo that I have on this phone from inside the restaurant. We arrived at 7:15pm Friday night. And ended up get seated at 8:10pm. We were informed we would have a 45 min wait. Personally I'd rather hear an hour and be surprised when it's sooner if possible. The host guy was less enthusiastic than I expected. Seemed like maybe a person that maybe had a long day. Once seated our waitress was pretty quick to get the drink order. She returned promptly with drinks. This was my first time here and for context, this place is a vibe, it's dimly lit, basement of an industrial building vibes with the pipes exposed on ceiling, no windows and overall industrial appearance. The tables were pretty close together and left little room to walk making for a more cozy/friendly/crowded atmosphere. Ok so when the waitress started taking orders, I placed myself last bc I hadn't decided yet. It got to me and I ended up feeling rushed even though I told myself I wasn't going to rush, even if they had to come back. But again, seemed like a person that maybe had a long day or someone tired of dealing with difficult people. This restaurant was completely full, I can understand even though it was still pretty early in the night. Ok, not a terrible wait later, food arrived! I had a burger with cheddar, bacon, jalapeno and everything else that comes on it. My wife and I shared a basket of fries also with a side of ranch. I was definitely happy with the food! I don't say that often! Fries were amazing especially with ranch and the burger was delicious! My wife and I had a soft drink, she had a burger as well. Our ticket was just over $50. It's on the pricey side for us poorer folk but the food was phenomenal! Only thing I would change is enthusiasm in the staff to help take this experience the full distance. Have a blessed day and it's worth checking out this neat...

Let me start out by saying we LOVE Hugo’s. We’ve never had an issue until last night. After we were sat, we ordered drinks and some fries to start. Our waitress left and then came back over to take the table beside us drink order. She returned with their drinks, but not ours and then took another table’s drink order. When she returned with their drinks, we reminded her that we had ordered drinks. No apology or anything, which is okay but found it odd. We then got our drinks with our plates for the fries. So we sat without the drinks we ordered for over 10 minutes. We finished the fries as a starter, while our drinks ran dry. When one of the guys busing came by to get the starter plates, we mentioned our drinks to him and he brought some new ones back. We then got our burger a little while later and asked our server for some condiments for it, and some refills because by this point, I had finished my coke again. Our server made multiple trips back to our section to attend to the tables around us but didn’t bring us any drinks or condiments. We gave it some time to be patient but after 10 minutes, it became clear that she had forgot again. We flagged down the gentleman busing again and asked him to relay to the server that we needed a coke and some condiments. Our server came back a few minutes later but stopped by multiples tables first and our table last with the condiments, which we found odd since we had been waiting and not eating our burger without the needed condiments. She also didn’t bring us drinks, so we had to remind her and wait again for those. We have a history in the service industry so I understand how difficult the job can be and how busy it can get, however, the service and effort given did not reflect what we and others have gotten over the...
